My piglet has smoked and consumed oil ever since it was new. I always
thought it was rings that hadn't seated correctly, but after 6K miles
the smoking and oil consumption remains about the same. It looks like
I will have to rebuild the top end to fix this. Anyone else had a
similar situation? or know why the rings would not have seated right
to begin with? Can I just throw new rings in? or do I have hone and
prep the cylinder for new rings and then do another break in period?

As per personal experience, the "break in" period that the
manufacturer asks you to go through isn't the best. Probably they're
trying to do 2 things. Make sure it's out of warranty before you go
tearing about or keeping you under the learning curve so you don't
kill yourself on this new bike.
Unless the valve seals were installed upside down, it's probably
the rings. A re-ring and use a ball hone (just scuffing the inside
to get the crosshatch back) would be the best/easeiest route in my
mind.
Personal experience and what I was taught is "ride it like you're
gonna ride it". Meaning if you're going to tear along the dotted
line, break it in that way. Auto's, bikes, farm equipment, never
mattered to me. You've only got 15-20 miles to scuff the cylinders
and rings in and the company has probably gotten 6-7 of that done for
you. The pressure of the compression is what forces the rings
outward (along with a bit of "spring" pressure). The harder you run
it, the more pressure, the faster and tighter they'll seat. I ran the
piss out of everything I've ever bought and the only one that ever
used oil was my new Kawasaki that I DID do the factory recommended
break-in( maybe I was being nice to it?)
Since the rebuild and re-bore, I ran the living hell out of it from
the time I started it until the last time I turned it off. The "new,
improved" version of my bike didn't use a drop of oil since the last
oil change. In the last trip (2600 miles) it didn't use a bit of oil
and the trip was mostly high speed 4 lane driving. Oil changes are
between 1500-3000 miles depending on where I am, how busy I am and
the price of oil. Pennzoil 10W40 is all I use.
Your mileage might vary, as well as your oil consumption.

You guys probably won't believe this, can hardly believe it my self, but my
annual premium for 2 bikes, the 02 KLR and the 03 Yamaha YZF600R, 100/300
liability only, Progressive, is $105.00 a year. $37.00 a year for the KLR
and $68.00 for the YZF. I'm 53, no tickets or wrecks, no claims. Been with
progressive for over 20 years. I get a good driver discount and a nice
discount for the MSF courses. Haven't called on the third bike yet, but I
expect it will be similarly reasonable.
Comp & collision in Sacramento is another story, I can't remember the
quotes, but it was shockingly BIG dollars, so I don't carry it on any of my
vehicles. If ones ever stolen or I wad one up though, I'll be crying some
very big tears.
