exhaust odor

I recently joined this list after purchasing a 93 KLR650 from a friend of mine. A few years back he rode one down to the tip of south america and back (not the one I purchased). I am going to do a dual sport ride next month in Arkansas (T-16). Its put on by a group I belong to, the HSTA (http:// www.ridehsta.com/html/future.php). My other bike is a 1994 Yamaha GTS1000 that I use for the road events. There are several of us in Nebraska that do some dual sports events including the Fall Color Tour (http:// dualsportmagazine.com/2004FCT.html) in November. I have been upgrading the KLR a bit since the guys I ride with ride mostly DRZ's and KTM's. I don't want to get too stuck or too far behind chasing them around. I mounted a Kenda trackmaster rear tire that is so much better in the mud than the Kenda 270 that was on it that it is unbelievable. I put a new Kenda 270 on the front and added rimlocks allaround. I have added the LR progressive front springs and went to a 14T front sprocket and a 47 T rear sprocket. I've added IMS foot pegs and a moose skidplate. Made it more managable in the tight/steep/ slippery stuff, but it is still a lot of bike to muscle around compared to real dirt bike. I also have one of the Corbin flat seats on it and a Givi topcase mount so I can swap cases back and forth with my Yamaha. Terry Thompson

A couple of comments on the exhaust: 1. The two acorn nuts that attach the exhaust to the head tend to loosen. I added stainless lock washers to prevent this from reoccurring & this seems to work. 2. I replace the cheap screws holding the forward heat shield with stainless bolts & lock washers. While doing this, I shimmed the heat shield out about 1/8" with stainless washers. Welcome aboard. I've also been using my KLR to chase DRZs and KTMs throught the woods. The Trakmasters are great, but you'll want to change out that 270 front if you have anything wet or loose. A Pirelli MT21 or DUnlop D606 are both good offroad tires that will actually handle pavement better than the 270 (won't last as long though). How's the GTS? You don't see too many of those around.
