v-strom added to stable

Post by atlantaceo » Tue Mar 09, 2004 8:51 pm

A few days ago I posted that I rode my KLR from Atlanta to Daytona for bike week. Although the KLR was fun to ride, 8 hours on the superslab at 80mph was at the outer edge of comfort for this bike. So, today I picked up my 2004 Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom. This bike is a blast. The ergonomics are very similar to the KLR, and with 100HP and 430lbs, it really moves. Should be perfect for an Alaska trip planned for this July. The KLR will still get a lot of miles, just mostly off-road. Am also planning to lower the KLR so my wife can ride it as well.

I had an '03 Strom and a '97 KLR in my garage all last summer and was pleased with the pair. Cheers, Steve

(snipped) > Laser Pro Duro- 8lbs, lighter duty mounts than stock but otherwise VERY solid. As quiet as the stock pipe with a little more bass. The difference between "quiet enough to be legal" and "quiet enough that you can't hear me" which is great if you have land access issues where you live. As long as the Jardine pipe with spark arrestor. LPD has spark arrestor but isn't USFS approved. My original plan was to cut the turn-down tip and fit a supertrapp disc set, but now that I look at the thing I don't want to butcher it. I will figure out a temporary rig I can slap on the end if I get hassled about it, and throw that in my bag for enduros and dualsport rides. I had some issues getting tire clearance, and had to fit the pipe so it sticks out a bit. Still well covered by the OSR racks but will take a beating in rocks or tight woods. > > I am using a stock air filter, snorkel out, 4x 1" holes drilled in airbox- What jetting are people using with this pipe, and what mileage are you getting? I have a dynojet kit. > > Thanks > > -- > Brooklyn > '01 A15-Z KLR650 > '81 SR500 I have the street LPD but my jetting probably wouldn't work for you because of the Ca. gas and we're a little different on the intake side, but my set up for what it's worth - K&N, no screen, stock air box with snorkel removed, Dynojet 150 main, clip is forth groove from the top on the needle, 2 3/4 turns out on the pilot. Mileage between 40 and 48 on the road with a 16t and vigorous throttle. I did have a problem with the muffler working it's way slowly off the intermediate pipe a couple of times, I think from flex of the sub frame. Finally solved it by rotating the intermediate pipe/muffler clamp so that the bolt was on top, installed a slightly longer bolt, then fabricated a bracket from 1/8" bar stock, ended up being about 3" long I think, and attached it to the bolt on the clamp and to the forward mount hole for the stock muffler, locktited of course. Hasn't move again in the last 12,000 miles. Excellent pipe, but for what it costs it should come with better clamps, like T bolt clamps. Dan Bittner Sacramento A16 03 YZF600R
