Any opinions on the Aerostitch Darien pants? I'd like to get something with decent impact and abrasion protection, and these seem to offer that. My question is, are they OK for warmer weather or should I consider the "darien light" pants. I'd like something useful year round, which may be asking alot, but these pants are expensive! Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance Jim 95 klr- "barbie's revenge" Minnesota

I like the lights. They wear warm with jeans under them and are cool in the summer with just shorts underneath. For max protection you can get hip pads as well. Have 60,000kms on mine and they still wash up great! Very easy to get in and out of which means you wear them more often. Couple of riding buds have bought other brands and the zippers and flaps along with a loose lining makes getting them on and off a real PITA. Riley A15 Montreal

I hate the Stich pants when it's hot. After much waffling I bought the (insanely expensive) Cycleport Ultra II kevlar pants. They are uncoated fabric with an optional inner waterproof liner. Unlike any waterproof pant, Goretex or not, they flow lots of air which means that if you're moving you're not too hot. The impact and abrasion protection is probably slightly better than the Darien pants (so they claim, anyway, and after wearing the pants I'm inclined to believe them). I was afraid that having the waterproofing as an optional liner would be a pain (it does rain in the Northeast, after all), but, well, in the six or seven months (and about 5 or 6 thousand miles) I've had these pants I've been inconvenienced exactly 0 times. Granted, that may change once I've worn them through a whole summer. -Lujo jbstevens66 wrote:

I agree they can get a little hot, but I find if I'm moving there not bad. I commute in them all summer. When it's crazy hot I usually wimp out and take the car. I prefer riding when it's a bit chilly. My office mates think it's odd that sometimes I ride in when there's a light snow but drive in when it's 90+ F and sunny. It's all a compromise. They have worked out on summer trips across Canada as well as a late fall run up to Labrador. When I bought them in 99 there wasn't as much choice in textile gear. Are you using a Darien jacket? If you are OK with the jackets performance you will love the pants. Riley A15 Montreal

I just got a pair of Draggin' jeans yesterday. knees and butt are lined with knitted kevlar, which is supposed to be more abrasion resistant than leather (believe it or don't). slightly warmer than regular jeans... also bought their insertable knee protectors, but they are bulky and destroy the "stealth" aspect of the jeans. i'm happy with them & will probably wear them a lot more than i would other protective pants. yeah... but are they bullet proof, and perhaps more importantly, what do the girls think? ;)
