Had a blast riding my '04 KLR to Daytona from Atlanta. Left at
6:00AM on Wed from Alpharetta (30 Mi north of Atlanta) and got there
in time for a late lunch by the beach. 550 miles on Wed, 450 miles
on Thursday, then 550 miles home today.
The last 2 years I did the same ride on a GL1800. Obviously it was a
different ride this time, but the KLR did good. Since it was 70mph
most of the way, I put it on 85, which had me at about 80mph. I did
that for about 7 hours without a hiccup. Once I got there, the KLR
was a lot of fun around town.
Trying to decide now if I can ride the KLR to Alaska this summer or
if I need something bigger. I did demo the V-Strom 1000 at bike week
and thought it might make a good choice for Atlanta to Alaska. Any
thoughts?

For a great ride report by a couple of guys on V-Stroms, to Alaska,

I will be joining the V-Strom ranks very soon, keeping my A-15 and
lowering it for the wife!

I just can't see any difference between the V-strom and any other
sport bike. It looks like it would be awful for off road use.

Utterly different ergos than a sportbike. It's pretty much similar to
the KLR in ergos, one of the roomiest fit bikes sold.
I agree though, it's just not a dirtbike, in the same way a Ford Crown
Vic isn't a Jeep Rubicon.

It depends on what you call "off-road". I ride my KLR plenty of places
where I could rip the lower exhaust header off a V-strom in about 5
minutes. But a lot of people think of offroad as "off of a paved road",
and as long as you aren't hopping logs and rocks, there are a lot of
places that bike might work OK. Basically anyone who uses street tires
on their KLR might like the V-strom.
As I ride the 120mi on the highway to get to where I'm trail riding
tomorrow, I might feel like having another cylinder. That feeling will
disappear after the first mile of trails.

This is a great article and I have to admit that I'm impressed with
the V-strom's performance in this article. I don't think I'd want
one though. I really like the KTM 950 Adventure and I wish Honda or
Kawasaki would come out with something like it. The V-strom seems a
little to streetish for my taste.

Air it with a hand pump, insert axle, grab axle and bounce it as hard
as needed on opposite side of unseated bead. Axle in place gives you
something to grab, but if anything pops outta the hub at least you
have the correct placement of such parts in order.
