supertrapp question

just got my new trapp and looking for some insight on
how many discs to run. im the second owner of the bike
and not sure if the carb has been jetted. at first i
installed 8 discs the went down to 5 what the book
reccomends and cant tell much difference between the
two. i dont see any black on the fender from either
setup. and i didn't hear any popping from the exhaust
when i let off the throttle from either. have only
ridden about 15 miles though.
any help on this would be great. if it makes a
difference its a 95 with 8200 miles.
and with this setup how should i have the pilot screw
adjusted?

I too have recently installed a trapp (IDS) on my 95. I'm running a 10 disks
with a K&A filter and a DynoJet kit (140 Main)@ 7000 ft elevation. Low end
power and throttle response have greatly improved, but now I've got a flat
spot at the top end.
The best way to tell is to read your plug. It should be a nice tan color at
the tip of the porcelain, below the base of the center electrode. If it's
black then your too rich, white (colorless) then you're too lean. If
anything, your bike has leaned out. Be careful- If your too lean, you can
fry your engine, but I doubt just the addition of a trapp would lean you out
that bad. Also different circuit in the carb affect how the bike behaves at
different RPMs. There is a chart at

The previous owner installed an IDS2 Supertrapp exhaust. How do I know if there is a spark arrestor in the exhaust? What does one look like?
It says on the can that if you have the correct end cap on it contains a spark arrestor.
I have an end cap but when I look into the exhaust end cap I can see the last "disc" without any obstruction. The opening on the end cap is approximately 2.5 inches in diameter.
Any help would be appreciated. Also, if I don't have a spark arrestor can one be purchased resonably for this can?

The disc set IS the spark arrestor, you need a closed end cap for the
last disc (ie there should be no way to insert a broomstick into the
can). Contact Supertrapp, they should sell individual parts.
The "end cap" is just another disc without the center cut out, NOT the
cast aluminum turn-down canister cap that fastens with three allen bolts
to the outer canister.

used maybey 1 disc. would that be enough backpresure and would it run
right? i just cant afford to buy anything. i was hoping this would
work so i wouldnt have to worry with it.

It will run way too rich and the bike will perform horridly. My bike
came with the 4" race core 'Trapp on it with what looked to be three
discs in. The end of the can was pitch black from running so rich.
When I finally ordered up some more discs and pulled it apart, I found
that not only were there only three discs, but the disc closest to the
core had been tack welded solid. Essentially the first disc was
blocking the core almost entirely. The bike also sounded like a
broken lawn mower.
I added 8 discs and a heat shield, total of 9. Bike instantly ran
better, if a bit lean (carb screw mod isn't done yet). It seemed a
bit loud....I found out later that it has not a single scrap of
packing in it. It wasn't unbearable but it was loud.
I eventually repacked using stainless steel wool safety wired to the
core. I don't have many miles on that repack yet, but it sounds great
and hopefully will hold up.
Run it with 6 or 8 discs, the bike will thank you for it.

I wouldn't mess with it. Your likely to tear it up pulling it apart.
And then need mo money to repair it.
I always thought the supertrap was nice cause it still muffled ok
with the disks versus other pipes with no packing.

The bike won't run right with one disc.
Are you asking because it sounds offensively loud and you and to make it
more reasonable? If you are comfortable with the sound level and happy
with how the bike works, don't mess with it.
Basically, what Chris said. 6-8 discs will work well if you turn out the
pilot mixture screw a bit.
I've taken apart a few of these things. All but one have gone back
together. So far the most reliable way I've figured was using a dent
puller to get them apart. If you try to hammer the core out of the
muffler shell, it usually damages the core beyond repair.
If you repack it with stainless wool, it should be a lifetime fix and
won't need to be repacked.

hey thank you very much for the info!
the steal wool is a permenant fix? i would not have to repack?
i havent taken it aprt yet but i would love to know how to do the
steal wool thing!
my main objective was mostly concerned with making sure i have enough
backpresure and not having to keep messing with repacking.
it looks like an awsome idea
please tell me how to do this and again

just did the repacking of the supercrapp a week ago with the wool (got it
hat home depot for around 3 bucks, go to the paint section). I first removed
the core (pretty tough, I used a 32 impact socket and a dead blow hammer to
get it out, pushing it from the side of the slip on ie the one that connects
to the pipe. Then cleaned the original packing, put some wool around and
kept it in place with metallic wire (you can use chicken wire too). Then put
it back in and voila: no need to bother anymore. I haven't tried it on yet
tough. Total job: about 20 minutes to get the core out, 5 minutes to repack,
3 minutes to put it back in. But that's done once and for all.
