Group: This is one of those rare opportunities to cash-in on another person's mistake. I bought a new 2004 Kawasaki KLR650, with the intention of doing some Dual Sport riding. I spent about $2000 on upgrades and accessories, then decided what I really want is a dedicated dirt bike, with an added street legal kit. So, I have purchased a 2004 Yamaha WR450F and ordered the Baja Designs Dual Sport Kit. My KLR650 has 579 miles on the clock. The oil was changed at 52 miles, and again at 268 miles. It has never been down, and looks better than showroom new. I have added all of the items listed below, and have all of the stock items, as well. I have $7000 invested; first $5000 gets it. I think we need a official name for this symptom of buying, modding, then figuring out you don't like the bike. I could have put 579 miles on the bike in ONE day and NOT known whether or not I liked it, much less dump another $2000 into it. Jeez people, let this be a lesson... Ride the damn thing a thousand or two miles before you dump anymore money or time into it. I know many people who are inveterate modders and farklers, but they usually put a couple thousand miles before starting in on the bike. 579 miles? $2000 in accessories? It cost this guy $12 a mile to figure out he didn't like it! Z

gee wiz z, how bout not dumping on those guys. It's capitialism and consumerism at its best.Even Eco friendly. Folks like me with no brains or money get a chance to get part of the pie and a good steal at that.

I just don't like seeing someone taking a $2000+ hit on selling the bike. I didn't mean to directly dump on him, but it baffles as to why somebody would buy a brand new bike, toss $2000 of accessories on it and 500 miles later decide that it's not what they wanted. I'd make more sense to me if that had been done over a stretch of 20k+ miles, i.e. "I tried to make it fit, but it just didn't work out", but most the mods done by these people (bless their hearts, you're right, they keep the used KLR market healthy with great deals) HAVE NO EFFECT on the bikes overall qualities. Aside from perhaps tossing a new seat on it, there are few costly mods necessary in the first couple thousand miles of a KLR's life. For the seven grand spent, I could have bought 3 used bikes, and if I didn't like them, turned them around and not lost a cent! Z DC A5X A12X

Ouch!, Zach. I get your drift on the thought behind your post, but this kind of touches on what I mentioned somewhere on this page in reference to the post on "Wire Screen Removal". Individuals who like to "put money in" or tinker on their bikes often get a personal satisfaction that can't be qualified on an economical balance sheet. Guys like Fred, Jake, and many other companies wouldn't make it without some of the "foolhardiness" many of us enthusiasts tend to occasionally exhibit in our impulsive relationship with our machines. In fact if you probably got right down to it, we'd all be better off just buying a Geo Metro and giving up 2-wheel travel all together for the good of personal economic sanity and environmental impact. Yes, one cheap, fuel efficient automobile would go farther to this end than a motorcycle when all factors are considered. Anyway, I don't think many of us really ride motorcycles for predominantly altruistic and economic motives. I don't need to explain that. While I would be critical of a person who takes food out of the mouths of his children for his personal motorcycle pursuits, I doubt that's the case for this guy or most of the rest of us. Zach, this is no attack on you or many other fellow KLR folk here who have a good personal logic and motive when mentioning fiscal issues about what and how we modify or upgrade our bikes, but maybe the comment, "more brains than money" sends the wrong message. Zach, you know I love ya, babe, but I'll bet this guy already has a mother. Quit measuring him with your yardstick. I agree with you 100% on the concept of 1000 miles bone stock minimum, then mod it if you want, but different strokes for different folks. The guy tried a KLR, didn't like it, and now he's getting out from under it. If he gets $5k for it he'll be lucky. Personally, I think the bike is only worth about $4000 at the MOST! Who knows the caliber of mechanic that installed all the stuff? I would be way more apt to buy a bone stock used bike, rather than someone's project bike they monkeyed with and got tired of/ decided they didn't like. CA Stu :-)

Spending $2000 on accessories before you really ride the bike at all is just silly. Sorry, you basically said it yourself. And this is not the first time we've all seen this sort of thing. Since you're getting free access to a thousand-odd KLR enthusiasts, any of which might need a new bike or know someone who does, I respectfully suggest you not act like someone who wouldn't be fun to deal with in a transaction.
