Wow....I read all these reports of the cold weather "back East"...and think how glad I am we moved out to British Columbia 14 years ago (from Ontario). Although most of BC gets real winters, here in the Fraser Valley the temperature is usually about 7 or 8 degrees C. (45F) with a fair amount of rain. I bought a new 2004 KLR on Dec 24 and have been puttering around on it when the roads are dry. I wear a cheap Canadian Tire snowmobile suit that was only about $75. It is perfect as it fits over my leather jacket, has long legs and sleeves and allows me to be comfortable for a long time.
I was out for a ride yesterday, and over an hour, did not see another bike. Then, just as I turned into Agassiz, I pass the only other guy out...on another KLR !!!
My initial impression of the bike is good. I'm a little surprised ( but it is a tall bike )at how much I get blown around by side winds, as it is usually windy here by the mountains. I'm OK with the ride height as I'm 6'2", but I sure find it hard to get off..my back is a mess and I just can't get my leg up that last inch to clear the seat ! I think the tank should be flat so that a regular tank bag fits, and a center stand should be included .
Is there a throttle lock that works on the KLR ? My old one from my CB 900F won't work. And I'm wondering how a taller windshield affects the handling, as I already feel like a sail in the crosswinds.
But a neat bike that looks good in red. Great value as I just couldn't justify more money for what is only one of my hobbies.
And a great source of info with this KLR group. Thanks to all who responded to my last letter.

still riding in western canada !
Congrats on finding a place w/ decent weather in Canada in the winter!
Also, congrats on the KLR.
OK - I am also 6' 2" and I have a 16" tall windshield from Clearview.
Here in Las Vegas, Nevada, We also have windy conditions ( as, I am sure do
most). SO we both sit tall on a tall bike, and agree side-winds, being
passed on two-lane by oncoming big rigs push me a bit if I am not ready to
counter-steer into the air-pressure source. I took off the 16" shield, and
it was worse. Also, I accelerate faster at higher mph with it (unless I put
my body on the tank w/ the short stock one - a simple matter of
aerodynamics).
Also, at our height, the shield is easy to see over when off-road.
Just my 2 cents.

nova scotia club
Some of my fellow Nova Scotians have started a dual sport club. The
website is www.nsdsc.ca (Nova Scotia Dual Sport Club.) One of the
members is the founder or president of the New Brunswick dual sport
club. I will be helping the club with trail information for the Cape
Breton Highlands area surrounded by the Cabot Trail. This might be
of interest to anyone from the Maritimes or for those thinking about
riding here in the future. - Everett
