I'm wanting the opinion of someone who has used the Ortlieb dry bags on their KLR and how they have worked out. I don't want to use the optinal tube racks with them----I want to just throw them over the seat and let them hug the side panels to keep things narrow and light. I was worried about the heat on these bags from the muffler. My stock Kaw bags get pretty warm, but have sustained no damage. I love my stock bags, but want something waterproof. Anybody got em' ??????? (I don't want to go to hard bags). Mark Sampson www.bigdogadventures.com

Fantastic bags. Loaded, they'll press the plastic side panel against the muffler and give you trouble. You can save money and rig something to keep the bag off. I bolted up a portion of a rocker panel from my old vw bug. Good luck. -----Original Message----- From: bigdogg@... I picked up a used pair from a member of this list over a year ago and I like them a lot. Full on water/dust proof and light enough to endure severe off road bouncing. Not a huge amount of space but I pack light and use a dry bag on the top rack for my tent, ground pad and tarp. I have a tubular rack mounted on my bike which keeps the bags well away from the muffler and allows me to pop on/off the bags in seconds. I am not wild about the fastening system especially the composite hooks that lock down on the rack but so far they show no signs of failure. --Jim (gearing up for Death Valley Daze) A-15

You'll at least need the simple bar for the exhaust side. They will cause the sidecover to melt against the exhaust, and the closed-cell foam cushion on the side of the bags starts to melt too. I love the bags. They hold a decent amount in the full-waterproof configuration. They hold a sh*tload of stuff it you overpack them and then bungee net over the top. I'm happy with them. I've had mine on for several months. Great product. No gripes so far. I do have a "grid" protecting them, which you will need. If you let them even get close to the pipe, they will melt. One of the straps has touched the pipe and melted. No big problem. Pretty expensive but well made. don

I think the muffler will melt them. If you slide them forward, the weight will press on the side panel, and the muffler will melt it.

I have Ortlieb dry bags mounted (4 years). Subjected to many miles and harsh conditions, no problems and contents stay minty fresh. I have HT racks mounted, no worries about melting. Dual Star (addy below) has nifty muffler guard. http://www.dual-star.com/ WVD --- Don Bittle wrote: I do have a "grid" protecting them, which you will need. The best way to make a KLR fast is to drop it out of an airplane, The motor does not make enough power to hurt itself. That's why the KLR will last almost forever, WFO will not hurt this bike, Mike Custom Ceramic pipe jet kit K&N filter Take lid off if I want extra air Custom, Dave's crash bars, Hang the bike from the ceiling with Progressive F and R springs Best bang for the money 50 W lights set in blinker housing, For Mexico running Skid plate, Helps with big rocks. New doohickey at 14,000 miles old one was broke and a bunch of other stuff Mike Odessa, Texas
