where are your nuts?

The owner's manual for my new 2004 KLR650 A18 clearly shows both front
and rear axle nuts on the left side of the motorcycle. My bike, in
fact, has the front nut on the left, and the rear nut on the right.
It probably makes little difference, but I was curious about which
side others have their axle nuts.

Mine are like yours (A16), which (as a right-hander) makes sense.
When loosening or tightening, you wanna work on the nut, as opposed to the
bolt.

I always thought it was a safety issue which side of the bike the axle nut
was on. My thinking was if the wheel bearings ever decided to go bad and
lock up, you want the rotation of the axle to tighten against the nut, not
loosen it. Having an axle without a nut is not good.

My nuts hang low, and to the right. (on the bike I mean) So sitting
on the bike, my front nut is on the left, and the rear is on the
right. I like it that way. I'm a right hander.
I also have found that I do not need another wrench to hold the bolt
on either axle. I also don't have cotter pins or the like. So I
just grab the wrench and loosen the Fugi Lock nut. I can adjust my
chain in about 45 seconds. coooool

I have the rear nut on the left side. thats so if I have to change a
tire in the field I can lean the bike over on the kick stand with a
prop stick and the bolt slides in from the top. if you try and do it
from the bottom the bolt keeps sliding out, and I think the brake
caliper bracket is easier to line up with the bolt in place. I
figured that one out while changing a tire.

Safety - Schmafety! If your bearings lock up,
especially at speed, your "nuts" will certainly be in
a bad place and you'll wish you were as far away from
them as possible. Properly cotter-pinned, you should
have no worries about losing a nut (pun intended) if
bearings locked up or your axel spun. Besides, if
your axel was spinning with the wheel, they would
overheat your swing-arm or fork mounting hole hardware
so quickly, them being aluminum and all, you would be
looking at a lot of $'s and parts if you didn't catch
it soon enough.

I have no stinking cottor pins, but do have them wiggly like snap
pins, after inserting them I added a couple zip ties to the open end
to keep them there in the likly event of a spill.
