Hell again. These Marine Corp. spec. tires are not cheap. Thoughts, especially for 20% on-road - 80% off-raod? Link to one of many sites - http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcbeware/pirellimt21.html Mike T A16 modified Las Vegas

The MT21s are the tire I usually suggest when someone who's never ridden on agressive knobbies asks about DOT knobbies. I used them for a year or so, and they have a really good combination of offroad grip and onroad handling. They don't last all that long but good DOT knobbies never do with road use. There are tires that handle better in soft terrain, but these are worse on the road (K760). The Dunlop D606 are comparable to the MT21 but a little more dirt-biased. Tumu used MT21s on the Alcan rally. It all depends on how much road usability you want to give up. WIth a D606 front and a K760 rear I can still go for road rides with friends on street bikes. I need earplugs because of the tire tread noise, and the K760 will throttle-steer easily once it gets heated up. You won't regret trying them, but if it turns out you ride in soft conditions more than intermediate, you'll want something different for the next set. Devon agi@... wrote:

Well, they either last 4,000 miles or 800 miles. Once the center knobs round off, they're pretty much useless offroad IMO, as the compound is so damn hard. The set I toasted in 800 miles could have been a fluke, but I was running about 15psi for 500 miles of 40/60 (on/off), plus 300 miles of highway @ 32psi. Pretty good when new, but they don't like to get wet once they're worn a bit in my experience. Next set to go on my dirt KLR will be a set of K760s. Z DC A5X A12X

Hello Zachariah. I just looked at an on-line photo of the K760's. http://www.mtatires.com/K760%20PAGE.htm They look better for acceleration and braking. One of my concerns (major) is washing out the front end due to mixed sand/rock ground, especially in off-camber curves. Thoughts?
