No kidding. I have never liked the length/design of the stock shifter. I only have a size 10 foot which is fairly common, and in all but the thinnest running type shoes I hate the minimal distance provided. Even just a pair of leather Hi-Tec hiking shoes have a tight fit in the stock setup. The "one spline up" adjustment is about the only fix with a stock length shifter. I'm going to look around for a longer shifter because I wear my MSR boots on some gnarlier rides, and it just plain stinks. A longer shifter is going to be more prone to damage to it and to the engine case, but I absolutely hate the stock design. I got an aftermarket (Happy Trails, I think) shifter which is made of better material and has a "case saver" flat on the end, but it is otherwise shaped exactly like the stock unit.
