unbiased opinion needed klr650 or xr650l - which is faster ?

Hi everyone, dannyg here......
My soon to be ex-friend in work is really ticking me off. 3 weeks
ago he drove my new 04 KLR650 home from the dealer for me. (I didnt
have my motorcycle licence yet). He keeps telling everyone in work
the bike is a "dog". It has a "flat spot", and the old XL500 he had
had a lot more power. I love my KLR, he wanted me to get the big
bulky XR650L, nobody including me liked the look of it. The guy in
work im talking about is the type of guy that only buys the best
(according to him). His 4 wheeler raptor, his snowmobile,his 3-
wheeler, his 1991 Jeep wrangler, all happen to be the best and
fastest. Can someone who owned or drove both the KLR650 & XR650L,
give me an unbiased opinion on which on is faster ? If they were
both in the 1/4 mile, which one would win. I cant find any gearing
specs. or speeds for the XR650L anywhere on the net. All I can find
is that it is has a lot of "torque". The guy in work dont understand
specs. and gearing. All he knows is that he buys a recreation
vehicle, buys a new pipe, has them jetted, lowers the gearing, and
then he has the best and fastest machines ever made. ( so he thinks )

The XRL will probably out accelerate and out perform the KLR, especially
if the time is spent properly jetting it and modding as such. BUT, the
XRL and KLR's are totally different: Have your buddy go for a 500 mile
ride on a XRL. It'll hurt, he'll have to stop every 100 miles for gas,
and by the end of the ride, he'll not want to look at the XRL for
several weeks.
The KLR on the other had, will handle the ride with aplomb. It's large
tank, comfortable (esp. in comparison to the XRL) seat, fairing and
smoother motor will make the long trips enjoyable.
In terms of dual sports the XRL and the KLR are at nearly opposite ends
of the spectrum. I assume that you didn't buy the KLR to have a barely
legal enduro bike that was tolerable on the street... but rather to have
a wickedly fun street bike that's tolerable in the dirt.
If you're happy with the bike, tell your buddy to shut his piehole and
go harass someone else with his attitude.

Ride your own ride, get rid of that moron, he's no friend. You don't
buy a KLR for it's lightning performance, you buy it for its utility
and major fun factor.

The XR650L is faster, and so is the XR650R, and the DR650 maybe even
the BMW650GS. But sooooooooo F#$%in what. I have over 40,000 miles on
my 2001 A15. This thing is a blast and the people who own them are
not a bunch of asses (well, most of them are not
). Your KLR will
be faster the XR650L after about 2.5 gallons. then it will fly past
it like it was standing still (and out of gas). I had a friend (now
EX) just like that guy. He had to always win, in everything. Nobody
liked him. Anyway, He bragged about how much better his XR400 was
(raced out) in the dirt compared to my KLR. Than he bragged about how
much better his Ducati Monster was than my KLR on the street. I just
ignore him. he has no friends

If you buy either one of these vehicles to do 1/4 mile racing, you are
smoking crack.
The Honda has more power stock.
A fresh '76 XT 500 with a hi-comp piston will smoke either one of these
bikes in the 1/4.
No one respects KLRs except the guys that own them, and I reckon we pretty
much love them.
Tell your "buddy" to take his penis envy elsewhere. Anyone who has to have
the "best" and "fastest" of anything obviously has other shortcomings that
need to be addressed.

I have both bikes. I think the honda pulls harder. as a matter of fact, I also have an
xr600 that I think pulls harder than the klr650. The point is, who cares. I don't think
anybody here bought the KLR650 for speed or acceleration.

First off, an XL650 doesn't make much more power than a KLR. Last I remember
reading an honest dyno test of a stock XR650 (bit more than umph than the XL)
I want to say it has about 38 ponies. Honda tuned the 650 to put most the meat
in the lower rpms while the KLR is a mid to top power band. The low end of a
Honda gives the seat of the pants illusion that it is faster. The better off
road suspension lets it maintain a higher speed, in the dirt, but from my
experiences on AMA DS rides I've yet to see the XL650 that can hang with a well
piloted KLR and then I've about killed myself trying to hang with a well piloted
XL650 in serious dirt. My unbiased opinion is they are both good bikes that
represent the ying and the yang of street and dirt. Different strokes for
different folks.
Now your soon to be ex-friend sounds ... well as a wizard once said, ignore
the little man behind the curtain.

After I bought a new BMW R75/5 in 1972, I came up with a
challenge for Harley riders who dissed my ride: Ten hours, any
direction, for pink slips. That usually shut them up. Try it on your
pal. (Oh, the /5 would waste a stock Sportster in a straight line,
too. Faint praise today, but it meant something at the time.)

I've owned both; at the same time even (for a short period) It
really depends if you mean faster in terms of acceleration; or by
mid-range power or by top end speed - the XRL definitely feels
quicker and more powerful from a standing stop but it seems to fall
off more rapidly in the mid range (2-3k RPM) then the KLR; in any
case I wouldn't worry too much about it. Neither machine is hardly
meant to break land-speed records and both have more then adequate
power to haul my large (5-11, 285lb) carcass around and either will
out-accelerate most four wheeled vehicles on the road
