I am starting to think about the JC Whitney travel trunk for my KLR 650. I am sure that the Givi case would be nice, but this one is pretty cheap and it seems to be what I am looking for: http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=64422&BQ=mot Anybody have any experience with this? That one is not removeable. I have the other JC Witless trunk, http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=123208&BQ=mot It pops off in a second, and is strong enough to shove under the bash plate and lean the bike up onto the sidestand for oiling the chain, removing the rear wheel, etc. Cheaper too.

Here's a link to my installation & pictures page of a different trunk model, the one that can be removed as luggage. http://klr6500.tripod.com/jcwtrunk.htm The one that I have, link to the relevant JCW page follows, has been on the bike almost from the day I bought my KLR. So, about 13000 miles later, it continues to be absolutely watertight, and the latch hardware performs flawlessly. I think one of the huge advantages is that you can remove it from the bike; using it as luggage is great, but sometimes you may not want it on there at all. I also have been using this (removable) trunk, although not on a klr. I think it is the best buy out there. Waterproof, tough, easily removable, theft-deterrent lock. That being said, my last one broke. I believe this is because my luggage rack as stock doesn't allow the mounting plate to be mounted flat, and this put extra stress on the retention mechanism, which broke. I went with the same trunk a year and a half later, and have straightened out the plate. I've got the $59 JCW trunk on mine. Ugly as hell, sturdy, waterproof, wouldn't dream of owning a bike without a top box on it now. http://www.panix.com/~cesser/mybike/ I think it's the same one MotoMark has all the install pics for on his site.

Indeed it does, and in fact, provides a nice backrest for your passenger. My webpage for it - http://klr6500.tripod.com/jcwtrunk.htm - gives an idea of what it looks like, although I could have done a better job with that first picture. I set the mounting plate so that the front of it "circled" around the cavity used for the stock toolbox. That not only gives me access to the original tool storage location, but provides more than enough room for my wife and me. You probably wouldn't want to set it that far back if you're going to load it down with heavy stuff, though. Clothing, a few light tools, food and stuff like that is what I use mine for...
