I'm glad to see that they patrol it then because a lot of the youngsters are riding way over their heads up there, I've seen myself. Unfortunately sounds like the guys that can ride are being punished too. I rode it this morning to check it out and I didn't see any "resident" cop up there, if they are paying someone to watch it on the weekdays he's looking at a lot of nothing but senery for hours on end, would be a huge waste of a law enforcement officer. Besides, you never have to break 50 mph to have a good time on that road, you owe to yourself to ride it some day. As a bonus there are dirt roads running off of it all over the place, perfect for a KLR. As for "big population", did you look at the pictures? There is no population. Over the years I've often ridden hwy 1 on sport bikes with guys out of the Bay area, many who are or were club racers at one time or another, and most of them are very, very good riders, way better than me for sure. Although I find it some what frustrating these days to ride it with the seemingly endless lines of sight seeing cagers and motorhomes, I would consider it a privilege to ride hwy 1 with someone who can spank these boys with a KLR, I'm always ready to learn something from a better rider. The job thing has me tied up until this coming Tuesday, but any day after that works for me. Let know the day, time and where to meet and I'll see you there. Sounds like fun. Ride your own ride.
