I need a bash plate and didn't know where to buy it from. the HT
plate says they trim it to fit a stand, does this mean it doesnt
have as much coverage? i also need a tank bag and didn't know if the
dual star one was a good one. where would you recommend i buy the
doohickey from?

From whoever has the doohickey and spring in stock. They are both just fine.
AFAIK all bash plates are now cut for a centerstand. If you want one full-coverage, H-T will weld on an extension for you for extra money. While you're at it, if you seriously plan to ride the KLR in rocks, log crossings, etc have H-T weld another piece of bottom plate onto the bash plate as well as extending it. I had this done, and am very happy I did. Just make sure your instructions are written down and faxed, including any sketches you feel necessary. Makes it easier on everyone involved.

This reminds me, one way to get your tent to pack smaller is to pack
the poles separately. This allows you fold/roll the tent and fly to
any shape you need for your luggage.
Another tip is to use a compression sack for your sleeping bag and
clothes. Check out the Aerostich or REI catalogs.

I just ordered and installed a bash plate from HT, I also ordered a Tourtech
tank bag and a whole bunch of other accessories for my KLR. I've also
orderd from Dual Star. Both companies served me well so I can't say one is
better than the other but can only speak to how the Bash Plate I got from HT
performs: A snap to install, very good coverage, not worried at all about
the amount of protection its providing. I don't know if theirs works better
for centerstands but if that's the case that's something to consider if you
ever want a center stand.
