Cotter pin, 1/8" or 5/32" X 2" will work. Get a J-Clip / hairpin/ hitch pin / whatever they're called in your neck of the woods, 1/8" or 5/32" will work, I reckon.. CA Stu. PS From buykawasaki.com, PIN-COTTER,4.0X 35

Hitch pins are fine if you safety-wire or at least zip-tie them closed. I've lost them in brush. Cotter pins are more of a PITA but more secure. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." Arnold Schwarzenneger, in The Running Man

BTW if someone tries to sell you a Nylock axle nut, run away screaming. A prevailing torque nut (like Jake's countershaft nuts) is safe, but a big inconvenience if used on the axle since it never "lets go" of the axle threads and you need wrenches not just to loosen it, but to spin it off also. BTW it's great for the countershaft sprocket. Devon ron.criswell@... wrote:

This reminds me, I really should take the bent over finishing nails out of the axle nut and the brake lever pivot one of these days.

If it's a stock speedo that means more like 90mph.

When you hold the throttle open to the stop and the bike won't go any faster.

No. Change the oil when you're supposed to, and don't worry about it. One of the advantages of a low-tuned motor like the KLR is durability. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." Arnold Schwarzenneger, in The Running Man

If both ends are bent over so the nail can't escape, then they're doing the job. If you just can't stand the sight of hillbilly engineering, then change them. Devon kingsqueak@... wrote:

Damn, am I the only one running Dual-Stars Fuji lock nuts?? I have them on the front and rear axle's and never deal with cotter pins, e- clips, and nails. I hated messing with those things for as long as it would take me to loosen the nut and adjust my chain. These nuts work great! I have loosened and retightened the rear at least 50 times, and the thing just stays where I put it. Once loosened, it can't be spun off by hand of coarse, but it's not as tight as a nylock nut, and doesn't wear out like one. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)
