Questions about KLR longevity come up frequently. I don't understand why people are worried about it. The known issues are well addressed in the FAQs. http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#knownissues Only thing I'd like to add is that IMO, if you want a KLR to last, keep the tach out of the red. My KLR tach has never been over 7, and has spent very little time over 6. But many miles between 5 and 6. My KLR has a noise coming from the top end now, but I think it's just something loose like maybe the top motor mount. If it was going to break, it probably would have done it last week when I was flogging it across the Mojave desert. Allan A14 79,000 miles

My Tengai has been well maintained and runs like the day I bought it (7Kmiles). It has 42,000 miles now. My '88 was run hard it's whole life and was an oil burner at 34K when I got it. It has 52K now and runs like the day I picked it up. I think the PO of my '89 was a retard who liked to have his hands in the engine a little too much. I got it cheap with 22.5K and have been pulling metal out of the engine for the last 6,000 miles. I think it'll will need a complete overhaul or at least a new head at 35-40K. My new philosophy: the first thing to check on any used bike is the oil sump screen. That will give you a good indication of how the bike was maintained. Mark

Buy the end of this month I will have over 40,000 miles on my 2001 KLR650, I change my doohickey about 2,000 miles ago even though it was still in good shape. I change the oil every 3000 miles or close to that and I used standard automotive oil, not motorcycle oil. Just change the oil + filter every 3K and do a valve adjustment every 6K and it should run great. clean your air filter every time you do an oil change or sooner if you ride in a dusty place. Put a motorcycle fuel filter in line and carry a spare clutch cable. thats about all you need to worry about. get a cable luber and lube your clutch cable every time you oil your chain.
