carby help - solution

OK, a sheepish thanks to Walt, Prof. Jim, Devon and all the other responses to my ealier post regarding surging between 3200 and 4200 rpm. Armed with third party info, I altered the needle clip to the 5th groove without improvement, and then set to work changing one thing at a time. Fortunately, the first thing I did was to clean the air filter (for the third time) and violla... problem solved. (mostly). Seems that in the process of diagnosis, I had two problems running concurrently. The first time I cleaned the filter, there was some improvement, but surging remained. Two cleanings of the carby later, we disassembled the carb to soak, and on high pressure air spraying, discovered a chewed up pilot screw o-ring and missing washer. Replaced them, but still had some surging. One point I didn't mention was crashing the bike on one of the test drives by high siding off a rut in the trail. No big deal except for riding alone, and picking myself up to clean the dirt out of my eyes, recover the bike from the side of the road, and realize that 50 minutes was missing from my previous time check and that I was blurry on where exactly I was. (Hadn't been sure to begin with). Made it home. Sprained toe and ankle (a week before taking the Boy Scouts on a 60 mile high Cascades wilderness hike) etc. etc. What I think happened in all this was that the crash significantly loaded the airbox with our high desert powder, rapidly encrustin the air filter. Lack of air flow gave the mid range stumble, which got worse with time, and which I thought previous filter cleanings had ruled out. Still feel I have some re-tuning of the carby to do, but at least have a bike back that's a joy to ride.
