found my problem!

On Aug 30 I posted a thread about engine vibration.
I didn't really think it was the doohikey because there didn't seem to
be any excess noise, but decided to replace it anyway and ordered the
parts a few days ago.
This afternoon I read a number of strings about broken doohikeys and
springs(at KLR650.NET/FORUMS)and couldn't wait for the parts to find
out if it was the cause.
So out to the garage I went to pop off the outer cover and at least
take a look.
I must admit I felt releived (briefly) when I found the doohickey
intact, but that feeling quickly faded as I pushed it back and forth
with a small screw driver, watching the chain sag and snap tight with
each motion.... You guessed it, no spring!
This is 2001 has just over 9000km on it. If you're sitting there
thinking that it won't happen to you, all I can say is CHANGE IT NOW
BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

I've certainly felt more confident thrashing mine since I looked at
my 89's doohickey at Moose's place a couple of weeks ago. My KLR is
my daily driver. My R1100RS has started to make my hip hurt from
lack of legroom, so I haven't been riding it much, and I just put a
85 Cagiva Alazzurra in the living room to give myself something to do
at night. So far, I've got all the lights and instruments working
right (seems like it, anyway), puttied up a chunk missing from the
front fender, and am learning what is involved in being an eye-
tailian bike owner. Not sure if that's something that I want to be,
but it will fill the bill for those Sunday social vintage-type rides.
This bike is approaching vintage status and is quite rare, plus, it's
a 650....just like my daily driver. I think the KLR handles way
better, especially when you consider they are contemporaries of each
other (current KLR was probably designed in '85 or so). Sure beats
not having a bike to ride!
PS got a mess of Alazzurra SS body parts, if by chance there are
others out there....

I saw exactly the same thing with my A16 with about 3,000 miles on it.
