can you spell frustration???? (the frozen bolt saga continues)

Hi guys... Well I took my bike to my friends tire store and gave it a go with the impact gun. The screw started turning after a few seconds. We kept at it for about a minute. It never turned loosely, but turned allright. So I came home and hit it again, and again, and again, harder, harder... mmmm this is not working. The bolt(the parts diagram calls it a shaft) will turn with a little effort, but it just won't slide. Three questions: Am I hurting anything by banging on the damn thing? What will happen if I let it be and ride 25 000 miles to South America without lubbing the two needle bearings entrapped there? Has any of you encountered such difficulties removing the thing? The shaft I speak about is the lower suspension link, the one covered by silver plastic thingies. Any ideas are wellcome. Juan

Have you tried spraying a good penetrating oil in there? Or putting the nut back on the other side and *carefully* tapping on it? The shaft doesn't screw out, it just pulls out, and yours seems to be pretty well stuck. Good luck, __Arden --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "juanbalam" wrote:

If memory serves, i had similar trouble and needed to loosen up another nearby (bolt? Shaft? Something...) in order to get the thing you're describing out... I believe he got the nut off, but now can't get the long bolt out. In his post he said that it would turn,(with the air gun) slowly, not loosely, but would not slide.(I assume he means slide out) He then goes on to say that he went home and hit it again and again. (I assume this was to get it out, and not just because he was pissed) But then again, I have been known to be wrong, just ask my wife. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)

Moose Man, That is the problem with answering wrenching questions on the web... a lot of assumptions. Often the newer less experience mechanics for the same reason that they run into trouble give less than detailed accounts of where they are at. After reading Juan's original post, he never says that he took the nut off, just that it turns and turns. Hard to know what he has done and hasn't in the dismantling process. You may be right and the nut is off, but often truth is stranger than fiction. Maybe the nut is still on. When I read his post it sounded like it was just turning and would not come off (the nut). Maybe I read it wrong, kimo sabe?? Juan, By the way "kimo sabe" = quien no sabe, which is me in this case so fill us in - is the nut stripped or is nut off and the shaft just won't come out? Guys... the nut is obviously ON. And it is that way because I gave up on the freaking bolt and reassembled the whole rear suspension... which includes putting the nut back ON: BTW you can only put something back on if you have removed it first!!! The bolt is rust-welded to the sleeve and there is no way except maybe for a hidraulic press to take it out. The press has been ruled out because I'm not that stubborn and I can live with a frozen bolt in my bike... there are parts of me I don't want frozen though... Besides, Ron Cristwell told me that a pal of his has had the same frozen bolt problem and could not get it out either... and that's a lot of miles ago. He s had no problems. I wonder if HE took the nut off... ;-) Juan

Hey Juan, I don't know if it's available down your way, but PB Blaster is the answer. It is a penetrating oil sold by NAPA Auto parts in the USA and I have yet to find a fastener it can't loosen. It smells real bad, and stains everything, but by God it loosens frozen / rusted parts like nothing else. Good Luck CA Stu
