I am still in search of a KLR650 and was wondering if there is any
specific year to avoid? Has there been any major design changes I
should know about?
Thanks,

None really. All the models are the same since 1987 (I think 1987)
when the clutch was changed.
See

Curtis,
Look for at least a '96 or later. They have the better clutch, and
improved gearbox, along with fewer parts in the balancer system.
(sometimes the pins and springs in the early system take a hike to
la-la land)
