quick oil change ??

I just did my first oil change on the new to me
'99 KLR650. I bought one of those magnetic oil
drain plugs from Fred ages ago. The magnetic one
had a rubber washer. The one on the motorcycle
just had a metal washer. I used the magnetic one
with the rubber washer and left the metal washer
out. Is this OK or am I doing another oil change
to put the metal washer back in?
Also - I let it drain for 15 minutes (10 on the
side stand, 5 with me holding it perpendicular to
the ground) but still had a minor oil spill when
I changed the filter... is there a trick to
getting the oil out of the filter before pulling
it?

I reckon you're ok on the washer. If you really want to get all the
oil out of the filter cavity, there is a drain tube with a bolt in
the bottom of it right there on the right side engine cover. Look
below the oil filter cover and follow the tube downwards, you'll see
what I mean. I usually just have a rag handy and catch the overflow.

Did you get the tube back in the engine in the filter ?

Yah - got the metal tube. I was just wondering
if the bolt and the rubber washer was ok or if I
needed to use the bold and the metal washer.

The K&L magnetic drain plugs all used to come with the 0-ring seal. They
are now coming with a copper crush washer and the magnet looks like it is
attached better than before. If it were my bike I would use a crush washer
on the drain plug. Crush washers sell for less than $.50 each. Cheap
insurance.

Thanks Fred... as usual - way above and beyond
the call of the normal retailer when dealing with
you so far.
Will just do another oil change

As long as it seals sure why not. Just the metal last longer, the
rubber seals better, but might need replacement sooner. Just keep an
eye on it during changes and replace as needed. No biggie
As for the tube, its been known to be forgotten on changes thats all.
More a reminder than anything.

No.
It's only a little bit anyway, do it when the bike is on the
sidestand.
