speedo gone south

On the way to work the speedo on my '02 suddenly died. It fluctuated wildly
for a few moments, then worked fine for 10 minutes and then went completely
dead. I've suppressed the little voice in my head that says "license to
speed" and figure I'd best repair it. Anything obvious to look for first?
Is this common in a fairly new (14,000km) bike. As always, any advice would
be appreciated.

Check the cable first; it probably sheared.

Next time, clean and lube the cable once in a while. Take it loose at both
ends, pull the cable out, spray brake cleaner through the housing, clean
cable with brake cleaner, and lube the cable with white grease.
My KLR is still running the original speedo cable, came apart once when it
was not tightened properly, but never broken.

With only about 600 miles on my `03, I'm noticing a slight cable/gear
buzz in my speedo as well. This is the only complaint I am going to
have for the tech when I turn it in today for it's 500 mile service.
The bike is fabulous! It's everything I had hoped it would be. But I'm
betting the cable wasn't sufficiently lubed when the bike was built or
set up. It sounds like you need a new cable...
I'll post ride reports after this weekend. Too busy working and riding
right now. Dealership says they can turn the bike around in a day, so
that means I'm gone up north for some more trail riding this weekend.
Ride well,

Make sure you ask them to document your valve clearance for future
reference. (before and after)
Some have marked the top end with items to show if in fact the cover
was removed or not.
Valve adjustment is pretty easy, takes awhile, since you have so much
stuff to remove/install to get to them.
Enjoy your ride.

To preserve the batteries, you can just tape them together under a slight
bit of tension. I usually use the clear tape for sealing boxes, but in a
pinch, plain scotch tape works fine. place the batteries on the tape in a
'v' of about 45 degrees. Then straighten them out and wrap the tape around
(or if using scotch tape, place a second strip to hold them together). This
will keep the batteries under tension so they don't rattle apart and arc the
contacts. Also, with the tape on, the batteries fit snugly into the slots
and don't move - you'll need to tap the unit on a table to get the batteries
to slide out. I use the RAM mount on the ZRX and it works fine. On the KLR
I used that trick touratech mount. The mounts and battery taping
instructions can be found here:
http://www.cycoactive.com (or at least they
used to be there. I think the use of dielectric grease also helps.
