Yo KLR folks-

Check the tube coming from the side of the battery and make sure its in
place. Mine had a split and it leaked acid all over the frame /swingarm and
kickstand. The white crap (corrosion) is easily removed with some baking soda and
water although the paint is already eaten off.

I wanted to add that battery acid can do some really nasty stuff-----it
would really make me nervous if it got on to my chain as the acid can
actually change the molecular structure of metals-----weaken them severely
and cause them to break. I've noticed a little bit of damage to my KLR just
below the battery----I'm keeping an eye on it, but it was on there when I
bought the bike used.

The damage you speak of is "hydrogen embrittlement".
"The most vulnerable are high-strength steels, titanium alloys and aluminum
alloys."
http://www.navalmaterials.com/Forms/embrittlement.htm
"While high strength steels are the most common case of hydrogen
embrittlement all materials are susceptible."
http://www.mtec.or.th/th/labs/famd/famd/CA-hydrogen.htm
Apparently, it does more than just eat the paint off the frame. It's enough
to make me want to buy a sealed battery. If the battery that leaked is
several years old, it wouldn't be much waste to replace it now.

Did you wash your bike with "wheel cleaner"? I have had some bad
experiances where I have cleaned a bike with "magic" cleaner and every
zinc plated item looked like it had been lying next to the titanic for
a year or two. This was after just a few hours and the bike was
rinsed thouroghly after the wash.

klr needs choke to start when warm/hot

yo dual sporters-
riding the KLR650 today. Started right up when it was
cold. When I was doing errands and came back out to
the KLR it would just crank and crank. Pulled the
choke and it started right up. This happened each
time. Bike would stumble (cut-out) a little when
opening up the throttle on the street. It is 102
degrees today. Any ideas?
