buying a '98 klr 650

Greetings KLR enthusiasts,
I am a new member to the group and I was hoping someone could
provide me with some insight into buying
a used 1998 KLR 650 with 5K miles, which the owner claims has
never been crashed or laid down. I am planning an intercontinental
motorcycle adventure and it seems that the KLR 650 is the right tool
for the job. Thus my question: In your esteemed opinion(s), what
would be a good price for such a bike? Or I should say, if you were
in my shoes what would you pay? ALso What would you look for in the
bike knowing what you know about your KLRs.
