Looking for real world experiences if there's any out there.
Last week I purchased a used 2001 with just over 7,000 KM (about
4,400 miles).
Today I went to the dealer to change the oil and he noticed the by-
pass valve that goes inside the filter was missing. I have no idea
when this was removed. I'm thinking that who ever last changed the
oil carelessly chucked it, thinking it was part of the filter.
Anyone have any idea what damage this could have caused the engine?
Engine sounds and runs fine. Anything in particular I should check?

I had a VERY similar thing happen to me this weekend. The wife (on
her Seca II) and me (on the KLR) were riding up to Duluth for a visit
to Aerostich. I saw the car pull over to the right shoulder, and a
county sheriff pull in behind the car, but no lights on. I ride to
the left side of the lane (two lane blacktop) and just kind of watch
while passing.. sure enough, the IDIOT pulls out to do a u-turn
across both lanes of traffic.. I hit the brakes, and had enough
(just) room to go around the front of his car, and the wife was
slamming to a stop as fast as she could.. The a**hole looked right
at me, saw the wife, and just went on his way.. and the f***ing
deputy just pulled out and followed us to the next town.... I was SO
p**sed off, I would have probably killed someone if stopped..
Anyway, BE CAREFUL out there...
