balancer chain noise - new a17

Post by cdn_flyboy2003 » Sun Jun 01, 2003 6:35 pm

Hello all, I've been subscribing to this list for about a month but this is my first post. Among other web resources this list has provided me with the information necessary to decide to purchase a KLR650. I live in Yellowknife, Canada and had to buy the bike for Edmonton, and have it shipped up.( A 1500km journey). The bike came intact with some mods that I had the dealer ad. (Progressive front springs, steel brake line, Moose bash plate, IMS shifter). What a great day! After studying the manual I checked all the fluids etc, I started her up. After a moment or two I notice a bit of chain type noise comming from the balancer chain area. Is a bit of noise normal for the KLR? It is not that loud but you can hear it at idle when seated on the bike, thought you must really listen for it. Any comments on this would be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Rob Gagn Yellowknife, Canada

The KLR motor rattles a bit so some noise is normal. Of course, I can't hear the bike but I would guess that all is okay. It may get even quieter after some smooth break in. Pat

From your description I think your bike is perfectly normal - for better and worse. However, it does depend on what you mean by " a bit of noise ". I would plan on a doohickey and spring upgrade. Bogdan

Kurt, Look at the dates on both of the posts from the following subscriber. Any idea as to why these posts were generated to the list again? I rememeber these specifically because I replied to him, and because he's from waaaaayyyyy up in the NWT. Eric in Pa

help with diagnoses

Since you mentioned carburator rebuild is it possible that the enrichener is stuck partially on? Tear in the diaphragm during reassembly? Stuck float needle? Did the float hinge bracket get bent and increase the float level in the bowl? And yes, check the valves. Good luck. Todd
