new exhaust

Hi KLRists,
I have been silently following this list for a while, and I am really
amazed by the fact that there is so many KLR enthousiasts involded in
this list.
I just want to share my recent experience with exhaust replacement.
As several members on this list I was quite annoyed by the tweety
problem, so I started to look for a replacement for the stock
exhaust. (BTW my KLR is a 1998 that I bought brand new and it
developped its tweety problem within a year if I remember well).
I bought a Supertrapp IDS2 (the race model) I had it installed at my
local performance shop so they can tune the jetting properly (I
didn't knew much about jetting). They replace the stock 148 jet by a
152.5, they raised the needle by 1/8inch and they turned-out the
pilot screw by a turn and a half. Five of the Supertrapp plates were
installed. The bike ran very well, but that was way too loud for my
taste. I enjoy a little more noise for a little time, but there is no
way I could stand long distance riding with that exhaust.
So, back from an 100 mile run after the replacement, I figured I
could take 1 or 2 plates off just to see if it made a difference in
the noise level. Well believe it or not two screws out of three broke
when I tried to unmount the plates. I knew there was a replacement
core for the IDS2 that provided near stock sound level, and I was not
happy with my upgrade, so I told my local shop to order the silent
core. In the meantime I reinstalled the original exhaust.
After a while they received the part and I installed it. Now it
sounds the way I want, just a little bit louder than stock and still
I can't hear it on the highway. I hope its going to last for a while
now.
On another matter, did you know folks that you got me to buy a GPS ?
By reading the list I found that to be a real good idea to have a GPS
for adventure riding. Man is this expensive to read those lists...
Have a great summer everybody,
