Like I said a number of weeks ago, email lists are terrible places to pick up
used bikes most of the time.
The MCN used bike guide lists a 1992 KRL650 for $955.
So Brian, care to fill us in as to what is *so* special about your `92?

If the MCN guide is like most used bike guides, it will probably
assume steady depreciation from year to year. That assumption is not
necessarily reflected in actual market prices. Mileage and condition
probably has a lot more to do with price than does model year. I
wouldn't choke at all on $1700 for an A6, unless its condition
dictated a lower price. On the other hand, $950 for a 1992 in average
condition sounds like a steal to me.

Just out of interest (regarding the previous ebay
comment) it seems like you could make money
buying a new bike and ebaying the whole thing
piece by piece. Has anyone ever tried this?
Sorry for the Kramer-esque questions (Sienfeld)

I paid $1500 for an 89 last november, and it seemed like the best
deal around here (SF Bay Area). It is identical to a newer one, for
all practical purposes. It had 23,600 miles on it and also came with
a "salvage" title, which I don't care about, seeing as I bought the
bike for riding, not for any other reason.

Steady depreciation... Gee, pretty much the way the world works for most
consumables.
Kelly Blue Book on a `92. KLR650
Trade-in value: $1,100.00
Retail dealer showroom price: $ 1,690.00
I'm still curious, what makes this `92 worth more than typical retail?

Sure, but if the age doesn't relate as directly as usual to utility,
useful life or "iconic" value, then the market price won't bear out
the assumption regarding depreciation. If you could show me a market
where I could readily put my hands on a $950 '92, then I'd choke on
$1700, too. If they were available, I'd have one (or maybe three),
instead of my $2900 '98.

You may be letting the tail wag the dog. I'm not sure the blue book
really represents "typical retail", or if there is such a thing. I
suspect that the blue book on used motorcycles is based on extremely
limited information, even more so for a low-volume item like the KLR.
I live in a metro area of about 2 1/2 million, and would be
hard-pressed on a given week to find any used KLR on a dealer's floor,
or in the local want-ads, especially one as old as a '92. But if
$1,690 is typical, my question would be: 'How did this guy know to set
his price within ten bucks of blue book?'

No but quite a few new motorcycles have been stolen and parted out for 100%
profit.

Just as a reference, the prices for the MCN used bike guide comes from the
