I'm not sure how much I buy into it. Once I get the KLR running right I'll side by side compare it to 3 sportbikes (Ninja 250, FZR600, Ninja 1100) and let you know how she does. One rider's impressions on all 4 bikes. Don't get too smug yet, guys. -Fig

Probably not the most popular opinion, but what I like best about the KLR is you don't have to go fast. Nobody, except ignorant cagers who can't tell one bike from another expect you to go fast either. I consider this a feature! But if you guys keep talking like this, word will get out, and you're gonna spoil it for me. Now if your on a Ninja than you almost have to go fast. Not my style or the reason I ride. Pushing the envelope on a race track or out on the dirt is one thing, but doing it in my neck of the woods on the street is suicide. WWWaaayyyy too many deer and idiot drivers. (Notice I didn't just say cagers!) I'm the type who gives the HP parked along the side the road a thumbs-up as I pass...and I mean it! They are my friends. But to each their own. I agree on the suicide thing. I went riding last weekend with some guys on my Concourse up in Oklahoma at the Talimena skyway. One guy was on a Triumph Daytona, 2 on St Hondas, One on a BMW RS, and one on a 1100 Shadow. Me and the Shadow usually brought up the rear. The Triumph got up to almost 160 mph on the way up, and one of the ST's 135 mph. I held down to an occasional 100 - 110 mph. Only me and the Beemer were in good jackets and riding pants (me leather Hein Gericke jacket that one guy made fun of) and halfway good boots. The rest were in Joe Rocket type mesh summer jackets with Levi's and running type shoes. I don't guess any of these guy's have ever fallen hard or who have known riders that were killed (I have). Does riding on a 2 lane country road with no shoulder and blind curves full of possible farmers in pickups or tractors pulling into you, stray dogs, and stupid deer turn you on at well above the speed limit? It doesn't me. I have done plenty of play racing on dirt (and a few real races) and have no qualms about that even though hitting a tree solid at 40 or 50 has potential for being serious in itself. But buzzing along at 110, 135, or 160 on a 2 lane and a deer or dog or farmer does something stupid, your life will change drastically ................. and if you live you are going to have a big hospital bill. I tend to be conservative too. Holding handlebars is not a great place to feel invulnerable. HOWEVER, the comments being made were that the KLR could outcorner a new sportbike. I think the KLR is going to be a fun bike, but let's try to maintain some objectivity. All I did was offer to do some hands on, seat of the pants comparos between my bikes and the KLR so you would TRULY know how it compares in the twisties. And loud pipes suck. -Fig

Hrm.. The Ninja 250 gives up ~5hp, and also has single disks front and rear. But we were talking about corners, not straights, right

Me either. I say...Ride Safe and Ride Again Tomorrow! There's enough that can go wrong without increasing the odds yourself. Proficient Motorcycling, rather than Twist the Wrist, is the stuff I'm more likely to read.

I don't think loud pipes help. In fact I think they confuse the deer even more. They have to be the dumbest animals on the planet! Matt

I think maybe the second dumbest, chickens being THE dumbest.. Ever ride up on a bunch of them on the road? ARGH!!! However, you do have a much higher chance of survival when hitting some chickens than deer, without a doubt.. Deer are so dumb that they don't even know themselves which way they'll run when scared... some sort of random program that just makes them turn. I guess it's something to do with helping them escape preditors.. (I need one for creditors...) Hope you all get in a ride this weekend, we're supposed to have a crummy Sunday in MN... Ron

No, turkeys are the stupidest. I must have chased 20 of them down a trail for 500m until they decided to head off into the woods. I wasn't trying to chase them, they where just in my way. I could have easily reached down and grabbed a couple. I think it was the first time I ever saw wild turkeys. They are really big and ugly, and could mess you up good if you hit one. Bryan K A14

In all my years of riding I'd have to say the dumbest animal I've encountered is your typical grade A beef on the hoof. Some run away. Some bolt right across your bow. Some try to out run you. And ever so often there is the one that wants to take you on. You're mostly thinking how that's about a ton of flesh with hooves and horns.
