Fellow KLR's,
Now that spring has finally arrived in the North East - I have
already seen two fatal accidents in my area. Please check your
rearview mirrows while standing in a road waiting to turn into a
business or other street. Both motorcycles were waiting to turn off a
road and were hit while standing still - both dead at the scene.

I'm starting to see it now my self, I just had a guy pull out in front of me and the SOB was looking right at me when he made the turn then to piss me off even more he covered his face with his hands so he would not see me hit him. When I come to a stop and if a car is in front of me I always pull right up to the side of them, I know all to well if they don't care about me to make a turn in front of me when they are looking right at me I know they will not stop it time to not hit me if I'm in front of them, and you have to keep in mind that everyone is on a cell phone today and they are not thinking about what they are doing.... I say if you kill a biker like that give them 20 yr's to life and maybe then they will see us on the road.

Even if mano e mano is not your style you can still intimidate the
hell out of anyone by simply following them to their destination, and
when you're both stopped, pull out your cell phone and report the
incident to the police and give them your location. Then make a big
show of writing down the offender's vehicle description, tag number
and if it's a residence the street address - they don't know what
you're going to do with that information. If the other driver
confronts you while you're calling tell the 911 operator what's going
on. If it's true (as in this case) you can even tell the 911 operator
that the other driver has threatened your life with an automobile. In
this situation where the other driver gestured in a way that
indicated they saw you and still made an illegal left turn across
your path, a case can be made for reckless endangerment or whatever
they call it in your state. The police may choose to send a patrol
car or not. If so, that's great, tell your story in front of the LEO.
It will just be your word against theirs but I assure you even if the
LEO blows the whole thing off the other driver will not like the
embarrasment of having to talk to a cop in a public place. And, even
if the police don't send a patrol, they'll get the point and will
think twice before pulling the same stunt again.
I once followed an "offender" home in this way. The dispatcher said
they were sending a car so I waited in the street and when the police
came, they called the driver out into the yard to talk. Although
nothing came of it legally, I doubt that the other driver will ever
forget the incident since his neighbors were out standing in their
yards watching the whole thing unfold. It was very embarrasing for
him but they didn't know me from Adam so I lost nothing but about 30
minutes of riding time. I did gain tremendous satisfaction from the
affair!

Same story here. Last Thursday friend of mine got hit from behind.
A woman driver was going about 5-10 mph and wanted to take the turn
to the right. He was sitting on the red light and she just run right
over him - claiming that she did not see him! How can you not see a
big motorcycle in front of you?
He is ok but the bike has a lot of damage, rear fender, blinkers,
lights, tank ...

I think if you are driving around with the assumption that the
headlight modulator, orange vest, blinkers, neon, running lights,
hi-viz jacket, etc are going to 'make you more visible' than you are
just asking for it. Does it help? Sure but it's not a miracle cure.
I have enough close calls in my big truck to not even second guess
things when I'm on the bike. I drive aggressively, monitor my mirrors,
and do what I have to (legally or not legally) to either make them
notice me or just get the hell out of their way.
Between cell phones and TV's in the car and just complete
stupidity I wonder why there aren't more fatal car accidents...
And around here (NC) following someone home would be an invitation to
getting shot.

The best defense will always be a good offense, and never ever, never ever, ever, look the driver in the eyes. They'll make perfect eye contact with you and then proceed the run your ass over. Always watch the front bumper or better yet front wheel, if they start moving you start playing defense fast. 31 yrs, only one accident with a car,and it was my fault. Let's just say alcohol was involved and leave it at that. Dave A12
