Has anyone used one of those devices that allow
you put your motorcycle on the back of your car -
like this:

Do these work with bikes as large as a KLR650?
Or should I not bother and go with a trailer?
Suggestions? I have a Jeep Wrangler if it
matters.
I was hoping to use a KLR650 to assist in one way
solo kayaking trips around the area (i.e. drop
off the bike, drive up stream and kayak back to
it).

Sorry, I hit send before answering the rest of your questions.
They work, don't add the length that a trailer does and stand up over some really rough road. I use mine whenever there is some reason that I can't take the trailer. I also use it on the FRONT of my truck with the "little" bike (Honda XL200) when towing a camping trailer behind us.
That said I would not use one on your jeep. The tounge weight rating on your jeep is probablly a lot less than the weight of a KLR. You are putting it not just on the bumper, but hanging it out there pretty far creating a lever effect that can really tork you around. It is unnerving watching the bike bounce around (no matter how tight you tie it down) behind you and you also want to remember that the suspension on a bike is made to absorb inertia front to back, not side to side.
I believe that you would be much happier with a small trailer. Easier to load, doesnt put as much weight on the tounge of your jeep and can be used for a variety of other uses.
I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have. Lemme know.

On my KLR, on my Venture Royale, on my GS1150ES, on my DR400Z, on the KDX's
the DR replaced and just about on any other bike I've owned since Race Tech
Valves went on the market. If you feel the KLR forks are under dampened they
are worth the price many times over.
