frame swapping?

Hello KLRistas,
This list has already been a great help to me after I recently bought my first KLR from a salvage yard only for find the damage was worse than I initially thought. I now have a replacement main frame and whole front end and am getting ready to swap out these two componants. If anyone has some helpfull advice on the order of attack I should take, it would be helpfull. I've never done this kind of swap before. I don't anticipate it to be too difficult. I will have some folks with more mechanical knowledge and tools than me to help if needed. Off list response is OK with me, but others may be interested also.
Thanks,
Hank Pfister

In your shoes, I would get replacement swingarm bearings, and a new
swingarm pivot bolt. It's usually easier to remove these (especially if
they're rusted in place) when you aren't concerned about re-using them.
Same thing with steering bearings, although you may be OK if the races
in the donor frame are decent (the bearings and inner races in the front
end were fine).
Also, some sort of workstand that you can bolt the frame to, that leaves
the wheels off the ground and the engine mounts accessible, would save
lots of wrestling. Remember, the engine hangs below the frame rails so
if you don't make the stand using a frame with a motor, you'll need to
leave some space between and below the frame rails.

Be sure to keep receipts and titles and such, at registration time
your local DMV might raise an eyebrowe with a title that now the bike
has a different VIN on the frame of the bike.
Im sure somebody has done this and knows the ins and outs.

Some listers aren't impressed with the Kawi Service Manuals but I wouldn't
attempt a swap like you're doing without them. A good camera couldn't hurt
either. Take a few pics as you're taking things apart so you'll be sure how
they go back together, you know what they say about a picture being worth a
thousand words!!
Good Luck,
Steve

I went out to Joisey on the new KLR (still breaking in.....less than 200 miles) to do some shopping at an audio shop and Campmor. Good roads for clicking through the gears and working those rings in. Cheap fill-up before coming back into Manhattan. Tomorrow's sposed to be even nicer, might go north to Harriman and Bear Mtn. to take advantage.............60 degrees and sunny!
