does anyone have a spare starter motor? :+(

sigh...
My starter crapped out on me, it can turn it but when it gets to the
compression stroke it goes gggrrrrrrr... I've dismantled and cleaned
the starter but it still turns weak.
Anyone got a good one laying around they would like to sell? I
*really* don't want to buy a new one...
mutter grumble,

Starters seldom give trouble. I would suspect your battery first and then
all your electrical connections between the battery and starter next. Have
your battery load checked and if it tests out good, I would clean and
tighten all the wiring connections between your battery and the starter. If
you still have the weak starter syndrome, I would check out your starter
clutch to see if it might be slipping. If all this checks out good, then I
would suspect the starter.
Good luck,
Fred

Opps, false alarm! :+o
After spending all night field stripping my start motor, playing with
the relay, and even digging into the side of the engine, I put the
bike on the charger and went to sleep.
This morning it cranked fine. DOH!
I guess the moral of this story is don't try to troubleshoot after
midnight...

I doubt it's your starter. I had very odd starting problems which turned
out to be a battery with a dead/weak cell. Make sure the battery is good
and fully charged and you shouldn't have a problem.

Like Fred and Zach said, get a spare battery. Most likely that's the
problem. I've never known a KLR starter to fail, batteries fail all the
time.

actually it may not have been a false alarm, as it is a warning to keep
closer tabs on the state of your battery. KLRs will usually give a warning
sign before possibly leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Electrolyte levels, proper charging and voltage loads etc. I use a
maintenance free battery and a Deltran battery tender.

you know I was just thinking, maybe it's the battery? That's what I would
check. Don't you agree? :^)

The ferry isn't running right now because of low water level. Work
is being done on alternate ramps and docks. The ferry may be
running again by the end of the month.
