camchain snapped

Ive gotten hold of a Klr650 with a snapped camchain, where can i get
a manual to help me repair it.
this is my first 650 although I had a klr250 but never needed to do
anything major with it, does this engine usually bend the valves etc
when the camchain snaps or is there anything else i should know
before i start.
Would it be better to look for a second hand engine than repair this
one, any help would bt appreciated

I guess you would have to look at it to see if it broke a hunk of the
case off, etc. I would sure think that a broken cam chain would
screw stuff up pretty bad!

Don't see anyone else answering your question, so I'll try. In overhead cam
motorcycle motors, when the cam timing jumps it usually does cause the
valves to hit the piston. Can bend valves and damage the piston. Only bike I
've ever had break a cam chain was an older one, it went straight to the
salvage yard. The chain can also wad up and break the case and other
things. Best I can tell ya is pull the head and left covers to see what's
broken. And there may be more than you can see. Sometimes after you get it
all back together and running, you find more things broken.
You don't mention the year or condition of the bike, but it sounds to me
like it's a donor bike. If it were me, I'd look for a KLR that is in running
condition.

Not necessarily so. I broke a cam chain on a CB160, and was
able to replace it and put it back on the road. Whether the valves
will foul the piaston is a matter of engine design. Unless
somebody knows the scoop on the KLR one way or the other,
the only way to know is to remove the head, something which
must be done anyway in order to repair it. I wouldn't throw the
motor away without having a look.

Fianlly, after snow, cold, more snow, etc., I was able to dig my way
out of driveway for a ride (actually two, one yesterday and one
today) for the first time since January. The LKR is perfect for this
purpose -- I have to go about a quarter mile up a dirt road to get to
the paved private road, then to paved state roads. All the culverts
are still packed with frozen leaves, meaning the dirt road is a
swampy pit. No way I'd troll my ZRX12 down there, but the KLR is
perfect. You can either putt and get some traction (I'm running
street-oriented Trailmaxes) or twist it and rooster the cell-using
SUVers. It was great to get out, sunny and about 50 degrees. Clocked
about 100 miles on backroads knocking the rust off. This is the
LONGEST winter I can remember, hope it's over.
