KLr650 cuts out ONLY when backing off on throttle and ONLY in mid to heavey rain. Have two KLR's. Swapped carbs and problem stayed with same bike(didn't move with carb) Replaced "sparky box" but no help. Clear hose to carb not a problem. Air box looks fine. Sprayed moisture retardent stuff on all connections. ITS NOT FUEL RELATED I don't think as carb was swapped. Plug is good. Drain hole around plug is clear. Has done it through 30 fuel fillings over 4000 mile trip so not bad fuel. Any ideas????? Maybe its coil and sparkplug wire???? Remember it ONLY does it when backing off on throttle and ONLY in mid to heavey rain. It has never left me stranded but is a real pain.

If you mean it looks unclogged, and routed according to the manual, then it may be a problem. Get another 2' of clear hose, and a plastic t-fitting (most hardware stores have this for $3.00 or so). Put the T a few inches away from the carb, and the second run of hose up under the seat somewhere. See if you can repeat the problem. Some people have had success with cutting the existing hose at a 45deg angle, or clipping another small hole in it halfway up. But I've ridden through water crossings that touched the bottom of the shrouds, and the bike kept running using the t-fitting setup. Devon A15 arlen_aas wrote:

If it only happens in mid to heavy rain it has to something that getting drenched and having troubles. If it were electrical it would be happening all the time and not just when you let off the throttle. As the problem is triggered by backing off the throttle the generic trouble shooting chart says we have to be focused on something in the fuel delivery. By switching carbs you showed the problem was not with the carb. Wouldn't expect water to bother any of the tank venting unless you had cracked or damaged tubing. So eliminate the impossible, and what ever else is left must be probable. The electrics and the fuel delivery appear to be trouble free. You don't see any signs of any quantities of water getting into the air box. That might only leave the evaporative system. This could be a long shot, but is there any chance water is getting into the canister, or the return hose from the canister back to carb/airbox such that as you back off the throttle a small amount of this water is getting sucked in? Could it possibly be this: from the KLR FAQ Bike stalls in the rain/deep water crossings This is generally caused by submersion of the carbeurator vent line. This is a clear/transparent pink hose running from the side of the carb down to the bottom of the bike. If this gets clogged, the carb will fail to operate properly and the engine will quit. The best solution is known as the "T-mod:" install a tee in this line near the carb. Route the original line the way it was, and route a second line up under the seat or behind the fairing. Arrowhead Motorsports now sells a kit for this. It must be getting late, I missed the clear hose statement. Good night... Conall

What is the best maintenance free battery for the KLR? What is the best price for it? (shipping included) Where do I buy it? Thanks in advance!
