Yea it's strange. 30 years ago Jane Fonda was calling US soldiers
baby killers. Now she stands in the front of the pro choice parade

I'll bet it would pare down the list membership a lot faster than any oil,
chain lube, air potato, or shooting bears thread.

rideofthe heart - mariola's accident

Hello Everyone ...
My name is Kris Cichon and I have been coordinating
www.rideoftheheart.com
for a quite time now.
Mariola Cichon still has no direct access to the Internet ... so please let
me pass this message.
As of January-16-2002 She has been involved in HEAD-ON-COLLISION with a
passenger car while ridding ROMA (her KLR650) in Gambia (West Africa).
She was on a third leg of her Solo Ride Around The World journey.
Accident happened on the outskirts of Banjul which is a major city of
Gambia.
Incoming passenger car apparently had not have properly functioning brakes
and driver just turned into her lane to avoid rear-end collision with a
stopped bus.
Having maximum 100 feet to decide, she had no chance to avoid accident. She
impacted car right in the middle of the front bumper. Impact force was
enough for both vehicles to be written-off...
Somehow she managed to clear steering bar and only left leg was impacted by
the body of the car, and severity broken in a lover part of the leg. Right
leg has been broken on lending, since she was thrown away several yards to
the soft roadside which prevented further injuries.
Accident was witnessed by the fellow motorcyclist ( I apologize here for
not having his name handy at this moment), who has secured her at the
accident scene and managed to contact Mr. Heinert Hantke
muecken@... (fellow German motorcyclist/mechanic living permanently
in Banjul/Gambia).
Heinert with his friends were able to provide basic medical treatment for
Mariola as well as provide a legal help with a police investigation.
Guys don't ask us what did it take to organize her evacuation. Well, as You
may guess, she did not have MedEvac (some crooked dealer quoted us for some
$2400/year .. and it was way over our head ... now we have learned one can
have it for about $400/year .. directly from a MedEvac Company .... well
life-is-life ... and we are in a constant process of learning ..)
Mr. Heinert Hantke was able to secure flight reservation and we were able
to put Mariola on a flight to Brussels (Belgium) ...
I could not book myself fast enough to go there and flyback with her
-(Airlines requires assisting person) - then Heinert offered his
assistance - and we were saved again.
She had to wait for a only plane whole 2 days !!! ...
Well, once we secured this one flight ... we started talking to American
Airlines ...and AA finally agreed to take her directly from Brussels to
Chicago ..
It was A VERY LONG JOURNEY for her ...
She has been in sort-of-unstable conditions (developing fever due to
ongoing malaria infection) ...
Directly form O'Hare airport she has been taken to the Illinois Masonic
Hospital ...
She has both diagnosed with both legs broken but no other serious injuries
are fund to date. Hips are badly bruised but not broken, helmet saved her
head. She cleared over a handlebar so it was miracle "in action" out there
- literally saving her life. Right leg is in much better conditions but
left leg required 4.5 hours long surgery.
As of now, surgery has been completed and malaria seems to fade away.
However Mariola is very week and tired and needs extensive rehab before she
will be able to carry for herself. BUT THIS WILL HAPPENED ... AND SHE IS
ALREADY PLANNING GO TO BACK TO AFRICA

... (once she whispers about it
, I can't keep my eyes dry .... - what a spirit in that little woman ....
what a spirit ..)
Well ... it is going to be at least 6 months before she will be able to
ride again. And her beloved ROMA (KLR650) needs to be resurrected from the
grave ...
This time she plans to use to write her story of crossing the Globe from
the North to the South ... and organizing her finances which are pretty
much nonexistent by now ... We don't even want to see our credit card bills
this month ... We will try to take her home a.s.a.p to minimize hospital
costs etc ...
Even being so close to her for so long ... I am still discovering a
wonderfully, amazingly unknown .. strong and beautiful woman in her ..
which puts my "super-male ego

" to the hardest test ever ... BUT I WILL
STAND IT ... and if you decide to stand by my side that will make ... many
.. many more ... then one day SHE WILL RIDE AGAIN.
Once she makes it back home (expected in a next 6-8 days) she will be able
to respond to the e-mails sent directly to mariola.cichon@...
...
I will try organize a laptop for her so she would be able to check her
mariolacichon@... account from within a rehab center ...
Please forgive me personal note of this statement,
Sincerely Yours;
Kris Cichon
//P.S .. To all who ride across Sahara desert .. there is a wonderful place
in Gambia to stop by for a bile check-up .. or just to relax a bit ...
Heinert Hantke agreed to share his home with everyone traveling in this
region ... his e-mail muecken@... ... Some information on her
accident have been published by someone on the Africa Grapewine network and
was initially incorrect - I have sent corrections already ... please help
me and voice this message to others ... I am so terribly busy running to
and from a hospital , my work .. and insurance office .. that I can use ANY
HELP .... thanks in advance ....KC//
