I am 5'9" with a 30" inseam. Do you think the 650 is too tall for me? What about lowering it?

No, once you get use to it you'll be fine. Try it stock for a while then decide if you really want the lowering links as they will limit off road ability. No its not too tall. But can get shorter "dog bones or shorter shock" if you got the cash. After riding mine awhile, either I have gotten used to it, or its settled down some after breaking in. (could be the extra 20 pounds I have gained since I got the bike too) Thats about my inseam 30~32 depending on clothing brand. Dooden

You shouldn't have a problem, I'm 5'8'' with a 30'' inside leg and have no problems with the KLR. I can get both sets of toes down which is OK as I spend most of the time on the road. If your going off road try a Corbin dished seat, only start modifying the suspension height as a last resort it was designed that way for a reason. I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam. I've never really understood the need (as opposed to desire) to touch the ground on both sides. All my dirt and dual sport bikes are too tall to touch on both sides. You just get used to it and adapt your riding style. Both my XR and KTM have 37" seats. On the beemer I can only touch the tips of my toes at the same time. I ride up to a stop with the right foot on the brake and just leave it there. As I stop, I lean slightly to the left and touch down the left toe; then hold the whole thing with the front and rear brakes. I mount them with the side stand down if I can, or just swing my leg over after a crash in the dirt....Bill

I've owned both, and yes a KLR650 can stay with an 883 unless it's one that's been extensively modified (in which case it probably isn't an 883 anymore, it's a 1200 with 883cc insurance rates). The KLR is a few less ponies and considerably less torque, but it's a helluva lot lighter too. The Sportster (they are really all the same bike regardless of model) is not lean & mean like it looks. It's a cruiser weighing well over 500lb wet that (on the plus side) is locomotive stable on the highway.
