I need to replace my 1994 KLR 650 stock gas tank. I called the dealer and it will cost $500+. I asked if he knew of anything better.......he said that the military purchases the KLR and immediately replaces the gas tank and other parts. They then resell these offed parts for quite cheap. Anyone heard of this?? Anyone know how to get more info on this?? Kenny krmills1@...

IMS makes a couple of different plastic replacement tanks for the KLR: the 5.5 gallon, and the 6.6 gallon "military tank" (part #113121, used on the USMC diesel KLR) which has the shrouds molded in. Some people refer to this as a 7-gallon tank, but the volume range is due to production variances. IMS may not list this tank on their web site, but they will make it on special order. You can specify any color they use. Black (B1) is supposedly best for sweat resistance (the fuel's, not yours); there is also green (G2), translucent green (G3), white (W1) and natural (N1). They also may have a coating that prevents fuel sweating. Here's the kicker (thanks, Walt): When you get a military tank, you are actually getting the commercial version of the military tank. The bonafide military tank has a different gas cap with a check valve in the vent to prevent leaks. The commercial version has a rubber baffle. The cap sizes are different, and not interchangeable between the two tanks. It appears that Dual Star is the only dealer that can provide the true military fuel tank. Huh....the guy at IMS - not the female that answers the phone but the male she refers you to if you have tricky questions - told me that the only difference between the caps was the size of the threads. Where did you get your info ? Also, I thought that Dual Star only sold the stock tanks that the military god rid of before putting on the IMS units. Bogdan

I had a similar problem with a "her" at IMS with my military/civilian tank. My aluminum bracket at the back of the tank was bent the wrong way and made the tank sit 3/4 inch to one side. the holes are not simetrical in the tank. Thats OK because the bracket has(supose to have) the holes offset in the same direction to compensate. On mine they put the blank in the bending press upsidedown so it didn't work right. I e-mail IMS and "she" told me they are not offset. I offset drilled the bracket myself and fixed it. My guess is the person answering the phones dont know diddley. If you get the civilian version of the 7 gal tank you can use the Accerbis locking gas cap. I cant remember the part number and its not in the catalog. I think it had alot of ones in it. something like #2111111?????

So finally we have "the rrreeesssst of the story". I'm jealous of your superior cap. For my use - touring with a tank bag and going down regularly - the weak point of said tank is the venting system. The tank bag crushes the vent tube and the tube - merely stuck onto a stem on top the cap - is likely to fall off when you drop the bike thus spilling gas on your tank bag. That way you're liable to have a nice gas odor in the motel room when you turn in for the night. I rigged up a shade tree system that protects the tube and all was/is kinda OK so far; worked for 7k miles but it still makes me a bit nervous. So...last month I purchased a one- way valve and rigged up a method that wold vent the tank would vent sans tube. Well the valve will stop gas from getting out but not fumes. My tank bag would have had the same relation to gas fumes as kielbasa has to smoke. Same result: stinky motel room. Now to my question, Walt. Does your super cap vent out fumes ? Do you still use the vent tube ? Bogdan

kcuf, Do you know how this locking Acerbis cap vents ? Not in the catalogue, that figures, nothing about this tank seems to be available in a not circuitous way. Bogdan

Lately I've been having problems with the engine cutting out when the fuel tank vent clogs. Either snow or mud in the vent hose, or maybe the passages in the cap are clogged. Has anyone added a dirtbike-style tank vent to their KLR cap? Devon
