busted counterbalancer spring

Just got the bad news from the bike shop... my engine's totaled.
Seems a spring on the counterbalancer broke, sending shrapnel into
the lower end of my Y2KLR 650, about 10k showing on the clock. All
the bottom-end bearings need to be replaced, with a total cost of
about $2500. Kawasaki is telling the shop they won't help with the
repairs since it's out of waranty and the counterbalancer adjustment
wasn't adjusted properly since there was some wear on the guides
(regular maintenance problem, not manufacturing problem.) I've
changed my oil and filter every 3000 miles and adjusted everything I
saw in the owner's manual whenever it said to adjust it.
Two questions... First, anyone else have a problem with a
counterbalancer spring turning into a hand grenade? Second, does
anyone have a decent KLR 650 motor for sale, cheap? Contact me at
davidmstrobel@....
Thanks for your help, folks.

I wouldn't take no for an answer from the dealer or KHI. First, there
are well-documented problems with the counterbalancer adjustment
mechanism (idler lever and spring). Search the list archives, and you
will find plenty of information. Second, I don't know how they can
say for certain that the counterbalancer was not correctly
adjusted. Third, just because the mfr's limited warranty has expired,
does not necessarily mean that the common law warranties do not apply.
Keep after them, go into small claims court if necessary. Good things
could happen.

Wait a minute here. The guides may show excessive wear because the
balancer adjustment system may not have been responding to adjustments for
quite a while. It wouldn't be the first time a klr owner though he was
adjusting the balancer chain when actually nothing was happening. The
problem that caused your engine to fail may not have been the first think
to go wrong but just the last.

I think I would try to disable it before I destroy it with a dremel.
I don't think your starter is going to like not having the KACR on
duty. Personally, I would leave it be.

Dave,
Just had my 10 month old, 6700 mile A16 in the shop. My dealer installed
Jake's doohickey and spring for me. When the mechanic got it opened up he
found the spring lying loose, the end radius broken off. He believes he
found all the pieces of the spring. Sounds as if I got lucky!
I certainly wouldn't give up the warranty fight. Is the selling dealer the
one who is working on the bike for you?
