carb diagnosis needed

This is the second time I've had this kind of problem. I have a 1990 KLR 650 with 16,000 miles on it. I was riding home from work on a cool night. During the first mile felt herky-jerky, like when you need to move the petcock from "run" to "reserve". At the first stop light, the engine died. I started it by opening the throttle wide. I made it the rest of the way with very uneven rpms. Last time something like this happened, I took the carb apart and cleaned it with carb spray. The problem persisted until I took off and cleaned the the "coasting enricher" (little round part on the left side of the carb). It didn't look to me like the needle was stuck or the foats were stuck - but then again I don't know what that would look like. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks -

For those folks that have installed Jake's excellent fuel filter line, does it replace the main thicker line running directly from the tank valve to the carb, or does it replace the thinner line from the tank valve to the T-valve on the carb? TIA Philip
