Howdy!
Newbie to the site here. Jake turned me on to this group in my search
for KLR knowledge and happiness.
I have had my 96 KLR for three years (14k miles) I bought it from a
guy in Salem OR who believed that a new baby and house ment no more
fun.
Lucky me the bike only had 850 miles on it. Thanks for the break in!
It has had a life of tight dirt bike trails in Portland, daily work
commutes and lots of spills from dealing with my obsessive wheelie
and stoppie fasination. And yet it is the only bike I own (2 old
harleys, 87 VFR,and a 91 F1) that just keeps going! until now.
The other day (now in Las Vegas) on my way to work it started
flooding and wouldn't start. I tapped the carb with a wrench to maybe
unstick a particle in the needle and seat. It worked.
Until Yesterday. Once again on the way to work something went wrong.
This time it tried to die on the freeway but rpms kept it going (it
protested) after work I put it on the trailer and brought it home.
I took apart the carb blew it out sprayed carb cleaner in it, checked
rubber manifolds for tears or leaks, cleaned the airfilter, pulled
the petcock and cleaned it, put it all back together to only have the
same problem... which now is... bike will start without choke and
idle rough and low. Then any throttle at all kills it. Some small
amounts of black smoke coming out exaust.
I drilled out the plug on the pilot screw but I'm waiting for Jakes
nifty tool before I adjust it.
It seems wierd that all of a sudden the mixture would be that far off
tract though.
Has anybody had this problem? HELP please.
Today I will try new gas..... just in case.
Excited to discover other KLR people.............Troy

"Can't we all just get along", I thought that was said by Rodney
King, the black guy that was beaten by the cops in LA? Maybe he got
it from the movie?
