a15 front sprocket question

Anybody know if the front sprocket for a A15 (retainer nut) will fit
the Pre-96's (retaining plate with bolts) ?
I ordered back X-mas time front (14T) and rear (45T w/ Mud Slots)
sprockets from Sprocket Specialists, the rear sprocket fit perfect,
however the front sprocket they sent me ( # 613S-14 ) has the holes
for a retainer plate and did not slip on the shaft at all, maybe I
could have tapped it with a hammer, but figured I would try the 15/45
combo for a while and write Sprocket Specialists.
Is it normal to have to tap new sprockets on a fairly new bike ?
The shaft diameter appears larger, when holding the two sprockets
together, not by alot however.
Today received a response that the part # 613S-14 is correct for my
bike. Of course they offered to replace it if it dont fit.
Figured I would toss this at the collective.

I had to tap on a 14t Sunstar sprocket. I just figured that I had a
shaft on the large end of tolerances and a sprocket on the short end (no
jokes please).
I used a lead-shot mallet and tapped lightly using a large socket for a
driver. Serious side loading on the countershaft has got to be bad, but
I don't know what would break first.
How was 15-45? I've been using 14-43 for the last 12,000mi, 15-45 would
be nearly the same but 1" shorter wheelbase.

I put on a 16 but found it different on both sides. One directions
slid right on, the other was too small- tapered. I hope you guys
didn't force the small side on? It appears spaced to go on one way to
align chain with rear better. You old timers know better, but mine
was definately tapered.
Also, how are you riding on the highway with a 14T? Boy, that must
turn some rpm at 75mph? I put a 16T on a like it, except for the
times I could use a bit more grunt.

The bike should pull the redline in 5th. I got it to 105 indicated, at
7250rpm but I couldn't fight the wobbles anymore and had to back off.
5500 gets me around 80-85mph, which is already too fast for highway
traffic around here. Usually 70-75 is enough to take the target off your
back.
The 14t is nicest in the rough offroad stuff. It will lug down to a
walking pace if I really push it.

I'm running a 16t right now, and I think the bike is overgeared. It
definitely will not pull redline in 5th. I did a 400 mile road trip on
Saturday and Sunday, and it was pretty relaxed on the highway,
but still wouldn't keep up with Shelly's R80 if she felt like wicking
it up. Since the KLR is not at its best at elevated road speeds
anyway, the 14t is not a bad choice for commuting, and best for
offroad, of course. Now that I've tried them all, I think the 15t is
best for most road work; still gives a decent roll-on from 55-75,
and not too busy at 80.

15/45 is nice, did'nt seem to loose enuff on the road to worry about
it yet, but offroad, its nice. Can actually use 2nd gear and stay on
the trails now. 1st is like a tank, very little clutch work in the
tighter stuff, 14/45 I will try some other time, since the 14t is
sitting next to my keyboard.
btw, thanks for the info, pretty sure I could have tapped it on, but
since the OEM was on the loose side figured asking would'nt hurt.

Reckon my shaft is a large one..

I'm running 16t and my bike certainly feels like it wouldn't have any
trouble pulling to redline, though I haven't been above 6000 rpm in 5th.
This is with a Clearview +11 and Givi 36L side cases and 45L topcase.

Well Murf, dont know where you live, but up here in Upper Michigan,
our highways consist of a blacktop path through the woods with some
paint in the middle, and I do not believe there are any highways up
here that exceed 55 mph posted speeds.
But with the 15/45 I was turning about 4100 rpm at near 60 mph, yet
to really ride much since installing, since the honey-do list /
birthday parties and such have kept me off the bike.
I was not to concerned about highway, since I either ride just to get
out or offroad, I do not think I would ever travel on a dual-sport.
Maybe truck it somewhere then ride that area however.

I ride on the road with 16t and 39t rear turn 3800rpm at 70 indicated
pulls all the Sierras in California in 5th gear . Riding 70-75 I get 64 +
mpg. would not concider redline with any sprocket, less rpm less stress on
moving parts. This is of course only on the road. TC
