No Jacket I know that I am going to get flamed on this but when it is really hot I do not wear my jacket. I am just curious how many others do not really wear a jacket when it is really hot. I am 44 years old and have been riding since I was 13 years old, so I am not a new rider. I have gone down on the road before (no for a very long time though) and make it a point to roll not skid. I love to ride and do Adventure type of riding and ride my KLR-650 to work every day. For me it is just too uncomfortable. I always wear my boots, gloves, jeans and helmet. I also do the other tabu thing to some and ride alone. I am careful when I do and do not go some places or as fast as I do when I am with other people, but I always have my cell phone and gps with me and love being one with nature and not having to answer to anyone else. Do not get me wrong I do love to ride with other riders and do often, but there is a special about being on your own schedule. So bring on the Flames and heat up my ass. not really wear a jacket when it is really hot. Hey Bill, On pavement, I almost always wear my jacket, but have been known to run to the store a few blocks away in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Stupid? Probably, but I only wear a few scraps of Lycra on my bicycles and hit 40 mph or better on skinny tires. My bottom line two- wheel safety gear is helmet and gloves, I don't go out without them.

If I didn't ride alone, I wouldn't ride much. I've got a few local riding buddies that go back 30 years, but it's hard to get together, so if I want to ride, I ride. No cell phone, either; got a GPS, but I generally know where I am anyway (learned to read map long ago). I've done adventure tours to Utah by myself, taking whatever back roads looked interesting, and lots of other solo trips here and there. You've just got to trust yourself, your equipment (including the way you prepared it), and go prepared to handle what comes. If you're worried about what could happen, don't bother getting out of bed. Lots of 'worst case' scenarios roll through my mind when I travel alone, and I get concerned (OK, scared) from time to time, but that's why they call it Adventure. Freedom doesn't come with a guarantee of safety, just ask all the veterans out there. I love to ride, with my buds or without them. Just wish I had time to do more of it.

I love my job. Whenever I get too cocky about my riding, I get to go scrape up somebody else who was just a little cockier. Last week I got to collect a young man who fell off his '01 GSXR 750 (the same as my non-KLR bike) while he was going basicaly straight on a road that I ride down all the time and think of as "safe" for a t-shirt ride. Well, after spending 45 mins covering over all of his road rash, I dug out my riding jacket, even though it was over 90 all last week. If I'm going to the trail, I'l just wear a long sleve t-shirt (I don't have a MX jersy yet), but when I go off road, I go OFF road, not just dirt/fire roads, but narrow little trails and stuff. I go alone for the same reasons you guys stated, not enough riding buddies who's schedules overlap with mine, and NO off-road riding buddies. The local trails are all inside of developed areas though, so I'm never far away from civilization. Ken EMT-P 2k1 GSXR-750 198? Bill, When it's hot, I wear motocross jersey, motocross pants, and body armor (chest protector, back protector, and shoulder pad combo). I also wear elbow and knee/shin guards, along with my motocross style boots. This set up breathes alot better than my Teknic jacket, even with all my vents open! Joe in Kansas

Jacket, gloves, boots, helmet all the time. Sure it's hot, but the pavement is much hotter. Gino

Right on Gino! Even when I lived in Atlanta I always wore my gear. With 17 years of riding, I'm not as experienced as some of the people on this list, however I think years of roadracing, a former career as a bike tester, and an average of 20,000km of year on the road have given me some pretty good bike handling skills. Nevertheless, I still went for a helluva ride when I got t-boned in an intersection when someone went through a red light years ago. I didn't have more than a fraction of a second to react, as the car came between rows of stopped cars. Shit happens. Dress for the crash, not the weather. And yes, you can die from road rash - from the infection that follows after you smear pavement into your system. Plus, do you know how deep they cut to give a skin graft? Nasty. I still have scars from crashing my bicycle from when I used to race those things. That was six years ago, at just over 60km/h. Don't even get me started on the crash test dummies who don't wear helmets. I can't even imagine what they're thinking. gord

If'n your talking about a riding jacket with armour and stuff, I never ride with one, since I dont have one. Try to wear at least hiking boots and jeans however.

Almost 40, been riding cycles since was old enuff to hold them up, and have never wore a "riding jacket", boots and a helmet are about it. Suspose I should don my Flame Resistant Suit now however. Dooden

I live in Bakersfield ,CA many know it can get hot in the summer and I ride every day. I have been riding since 1960 and this year is the first that I have worn a jacket. I have a First gear Mesh and I do not go anywhere without it. My next purchase should be riding pants. More material you have on the less skin you will lose.TC
