Hi all, I've been having problems with the bike apparently running very hot, ie. in the red section of the gauge is normal. But I wasn't convinced the bike was that hot because the fan was only coming on very rarely / normally. Did a *very* thorough flush job and refilled with a distilled water, water wetter, and anti-freeze mix to no effect. Checked the fan and all its connections out. Testing the sender revealed it was well within spec (comes on 94-100 C, goes off 91 C). So without testing the gauge I was concluding it was this or the sender unit at fault. Had cleaned all contacts to no effect. What is strange though is that both the gauge and the sender are not testing within the specs listed in the manual ! And this gauge worked fine last year ... For the sender I get: 70 75 80 85 90 95 100 Centigrade 78 64 52 45 40 34 30 Ohms Wheras the manual states 80 C -> 100-150 Ohm 100 C -> 52-78 Ohm And the gauge - manual wants - I get Bk/Y - W/Y 80-100 Ohm 52 Ohm Br - W/Y 95-120 Ohm 97 Ohm Even though this explains my indicated overheating I am suspicious that the manual is not completely correct. The data comes from the base manual (14-20/23) and not the supplemental klr650 manual, and yet looking through the archives I found mention of a 650 that had a 600 gauge cluster on and wasn't reading correctly. Did the specs really change and Kawasaki "forget" to put the corrected details in the supplemental manual? Can anyone else back up my results or theories before I decide whether this is worth spending money on. TIA /dan -- Daniel Sutcliffe A1 KLR650

My C-series supplement and A1-9 supplement say of the water temp sensor: 47-57 ohm @ 80degC 26-30 ohm @ 100degC which is consistent with the base manual specs for this component (page 14-22).

This is good and bad news: good - because it means my sender is within your quoted spec bad - because it confuses me more and means my gauge is out I have now found the data you quote in the supplement, in the table on page 14-4. Sorry for not looking harder before posting, thanks for pointing this out

I couldn't either. Does it make sense the gauge specs would be different if the sender specs were? I am still confused, is my bike overheating in the head but not in the radiator? (does this point to a bad thermostat?) or is my gauge just duff? Does anyone else have further info on the gauge tests? Or any other advice? Thanks /dan -- Daniel Sutcliffe A1 KLR650

From The Great White North, The crooks that stole my '95 KLR replaced the stock instrument cluster with one from a 85. The temp gauge will peg out on the hot side in about 3 minutes and will stay there till I quit for the day. I had the dealer shoot the reservoir with a temperature sensing gun and it's well within the operating range both at idle and after a half hour ride in 30C weather. Fan only came on once on a day when it hit 34 for a couple of minutes. While the gauge is not accurate I'm still comfortable with it as is. Having said that I'm still waiting for a resistor to arrive that I can place inline to bring the gauge into a useable operating range. This is simpler than changing the sensor. What an unpleasent thought. I wonder how many other "inconsistencies" there could be

Mine has a part# of 99924-1050-01 And on the 2nd (title?) page in the footer it states: (c)Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Ltd 1983 First Edition (16): Jul 4 1997(K) On page 14-22 I have: Internal Resistance of Water Temp Sender 80C(176F) : 100-150 Ohm 100C(212F) : 52-78 Ohm Just to make sure no-one looking through the archives gets confused by this, this is information is from my Base KLR600 manual. That is exactly what mine does. Accept I have the original gauge cluster. Your information would seem to confirm that the KLR650 temp guage does have a different spec to that of the KLR600 one. The problem is we only have the troubleshooting data from the KLR600 manual. Does anyone else have a known good gauge that they could easily measure the resistence across the Bk/Y-W/Y and Br-W/Y connectors? Then we know what it should be in a good gauge.

I can live with a gauge that reads high as long as I know it is the gauge at fault. It would be nice to have a cheap recalibration fix though.
