Subject: Air Leaks Tire Valve Stem
I have experienced air leaks at the base of the valve stem where it
contacts the rim on two different KLR's. In each situation, the
tires and valve inserts are fine. I am curious to know how the valve
stem fails (in case I am doing something to inadvertantly damage it)
to prevent this from happening again. Does anyone else have this
problem?

Actually, the arcticmoto guys had promised to carry a couple of KLRs in
the chase truck so anyone who wadded up their bike could finish the
ride. But, they changed their mind without telling anyone and left the
spare bikes in Whitehorse.
I don't know if they could send spares by courier, but since Tumu is
there I have to assume he asked and they were unable to assist.
Right now the best hope is for Tumu to jury rig the bike. I had figured
out a way to eliminate the cush drive, that should have Tumu either
finishing or running out of chain and sprockets close to the finish. The
safest thing would be for him to get replacement parts.
Again, if you are within overnight shipping distance of Yellowknife,
please give me a call.

Those dudes practice! They also ride bikes that are designed for rough
treatment, and many have extensive MX experience. Hitting 30ft jumps
probably seems easy when you aren't hitting the launch elbow-to-elbow
with 4 other guys.

The obvious thing to check is that the hole in the wheel isn't rough
or sharp where the valve stem goes through. The tiniest metal burr
will work its way into a tube. Also, if the stem doesn't go straight
through the tube, whether from a bad install or movement after
installation, it could get stressed enough to leak eventually.
Beyond that, all I have is questions: Have you always run the same
brand of tube? Do you change them when you change tires? Do you live
in a high ozone area? Are there gremlins in your garage?

Hey Folks,
If any of you are in overnight shipping range of Yellowknife, PLEASE
send the parts off your bike TODAY to keep Tumu moving.
I will send you my good replacement spares so you don't have your KLR
down waiting for Tumu to return the parts after the race.
The racers have a free day in Yellowknife tomorrow so Tumu can
receive the parts and get the repairs done.
I offered to send parts, but I'm being told by everyone that it will
be 2 days (with no guarantee) or three days guaranteed to Yellowknife
and that will be too late.
Send the parts to:

Old tubes, even fresh out of the box, may leak due to corrosion or
rubber rot at the base of the stem (don't ask how I know this). Too
little tire pressure can allow shifting of the tube which can tear
the tube at the stem.

Thanks! As is stands now, Tengai Mark will be sending a spare sprocket
carrier, bearing, and both axle spacers via Fedex to Yellowknife, NT,
CA. Tumu has a rest day tomorrow so if he gets the parts in the morning
he'll have time to get the bike together.
He was 1st, even with missing a TSD yesterday. Missing today's TSD will
put him 3rd. If he's back on a bike heading out of Yellowknife there's
still hope.

If Tumu needs the spacer between the sprocket holder and the hub, I found
that if he has an extra outer bearing that this works in a pinch to get him
back on the road. This bearing is the right spacing and inside diameter for
that spacer. I hope he didn't change tires and leave out this spacer. It
happens to the best of them. Let us know what you find out.

Show up at court, on time, and dressed neatly. If you have had an auto
license for the same 30 years, with no tickets, expect a fine.
I don't know of anyone who's gone to jail for driving unlicensed. But
then again I live in NY. Get a lawyer who's familiar with that court,
and works there fairly often.

If that's a Pancho Villa trip, it's probably worth the doough. I did
a 10-day Copper Canyon in '97. Don't know what the cost was then, but
it was a good trip, and one I wouldn't have made otherwise.
OTOH, for the price of an AlCan, I could have a helluva summer poking
around the west on my KLR.

It was a PV moto tour, and Rosen's Rides is probably just as good if not
better. One of these times, the stars will align so as to get on one of

Get endorsed before you go to court, and be prepared to show the
endorsement to the prosecutor. Be a nice guy, without an attitude.
With a clean record, you might end up paying prosecution costs, with
no new conviction on your record. I MN it would be called a
"continuance for dismissal"; with no driver license violations in the
following year, the slate would be wiped clean.

You should have 4-6 weeks before your court date if
one was given to you and you want to go. Head on over
to the local Department of Motor Vehicles and start
the process/get the endorsement. If you do go to
court, you will have proof that you have or are in the
process of correcting the violation.
Did your bike get towed? If so, the above might not
work as you were probably seen as an unlicensed driver
without the endorsement. Ever seen a KLR on a
flatbed? I have(not for the lack of a moto
endorsement).

A local Harley dealer had one of these on the floor a couple of
years ago. Asking price: $14,xxx.xx.
You had to laugh. At $4500.00 it might not be a bad deal.

I am selling one of my two KLR650s. The bike is a very clean, green
Y2K-A14, with only 3,150 miles on it. It has 7 months left on the
extended warrantee. It also has brand new Continental TKC80 tires.
They are much better than the stock rim protectors on and off road. I
bought this bike new to have an extra bike for my son to ride with me
on mountain stream fishing trips when he is home from grad school in
the summer, but now he is moving west, hence I no longer need 2 KLRs.
Kelly Blue Book says it's worth $3970 with averge milage and average
condition so I would like to get the best offer close to that since
it is in close to new condition with very low milage, and new tires.
Please call if you are interested. 802-453-4710 nights and weekends,
