1st gear trouble

Hello,
I seem to be having a little trouble shifting into 1ST gear
especially sitting still or traveling very slowly (<5mph) and coming
from neutral. It does not grind or anything. It just does not want
to go in. If I tap in the shifter a few times it eventually goes
right in. It seems to help if I give it a little gas. Is this
common? Is there a fix? I don't have any trouble with any of the
other gears and the clutch is in good shape.
The problem become significantly more pressing this morning while
making a left trun across traffic and I down shifted from 2nd into
neutral(while attempting to get to 1st) at about 5mph. The second
or so it took to get into first seemed like a lifetime as the on
comming truck showed no signs of slowing.
Thanks for any help

I had a problem like this and found that my shifter was hitting the
frame, but it was only effecting the downshift as you described. I
rotated the lever up a spline.

You might try reving the engine (blipping the throttle) before
downshifting. That helps me a lot when downshifting. You might try
changing the oil too if you haven't recently done that. On my bike,
the shifting gets worse and worse as the oil gets older. New oil
makes it shift like new again. In fact, missed shifts and
downshifting problems is my indicator for when to change the oil. I
might add that since my bike went past the 13,000 mile mark it has
shifted better than ever. Maybe it has finally broke in?
Brad in NC -> who didn't mention at how many miles I change the OIL
on purpose.

Mark,
Thanks for pointing out an obvious check I should have made. This
was indeed the problem. I had replaced the stock shifter with a
Moose unit and had simply put it in the same position not taking
into account that it was bigger DUHH.

Way to hot in september, There are world travelers on this list
that can tell you better than me how to cross over in to Mexico, The roads to
Batopilas and Urique are very easy on a KLR, But the back road to Batopilas
from urique is a full blown dirt bike road, Not KLR,,,,
Prepare the bike, Prepare the bike...... The KLR needs Brush guards
to cover the brake and clutch, It also needs a radator guard, A real skid
plate to cover the water pump.
