Thanks Mark. Your KLR page is excellent! I have always just used the markings on the swingarm to align the wheel. But, last night I was adjusting my chain and noticed that the small plate on the left side (with one indicator mark) that fits on the swingarm has some play in it when the wheel nut is loose. I could move that little plate with my hand enough that it would change the reading on the left side by half an increment. I don't have a center stand, but I do have a swing arm stand that I made out of 2x4's according to some instructions someone on the list sent me. Will a swing arm stand get in the way of the string? I'll give it a try this afternoon. Here is a stupid question for you: In the past I've borrowed a buddy's torque wrench to torque the rear wheel nut. He is out of town so I can't borrow it. How critical is it to have the rear wheel nut torqued to spec? Will "good and tight" do? Al

Although it's not common on the KLR, the cam chain tensioner might be leaving too much slack... I know that on the Concours, it get progressively noisier as the chain stretches, and then quiets right down when the tensioner finally clicks out and retensions the chain. You can check by removing the tensioner bolt and spring, then carefully removing the tensioner body/plunger. With the spring out, the tensioner will hold it's setting and you can see how extended it is... If it's at the end of it's travel, then it's time for a new cam chain, if not, then reset the plunger (push it back into the body), bolt the body back into the engine, AND THEN put the spring back in... You should hear the tensioner plunger rachet out. Since you've got the clever lever on order, I'd wait until you have all the pieces for that operation to check the balancer chain. Z DC
