I'll be replacing mine at under 4k on my A16. Waiting to see if I need to order tools or not, then will probably do at least two in my garage at the same time. Mileage does not seem to be a factor, it's all about how you feel about being safe, or playing the odds. For such a simple procedure (I know, relative term) to feel safe, why not?? MNRon

Philip, I don't think you have anything to worry about yet, my A14 has 49,000 on it. I told Jake that I want one. It will be 3 to 4 weeks. By the time I get it, the KLR will have over 50,000 miles, and by the time I get it installed, it will have who knows how many miles. My very own personal opinion is that the most likely cause of a broken doohickey is over tightening. Allan

Having replaced the doohickey on my bike, and doing Walter's alongside him, I have to say I don't understand how overtightening the bolt could cause the idler shaft lever to fracture along the thickest part. If they were all breaking on the weld I would believe this. My personal educated guess is the sloppy fit of the doohickey on the idler shaft, allows the flats on the idler shaft to slam into the inside of the doohickey core (while it's locked stationary by the bolt). This would happen with more force when you lug the motor, and as the inside of the doohickey wears. After a while, the core fatigues and shatters. Devon Allan Patton wrote:

I'm in the middle of replacing it - 7600 miles. Stock doohickey was okay, but Jake's does inspire a lot more confidence. Brian A9

12,500 miles on my a15, and the stocker is just fine. I can see why the piece that the bolt goes through cracks. Brittle, and I think I cracked mine during the "concrete" test- I threw it against the concrete to see just how brittle it was. I've hopefully got my name on the list for the next set of levers from Jake. (You DID put my name on the list, didn't you Jake?) Since the motor is apart for work, I just figured it was the best time to do it. I wouldn't hesitate to do it, just for the "reliability" and the piece of mind, even if I didn't have the bike in pieces and setting in boxes. millerized
